Gear box failure
Got a 1998 xk8 with the dreaded gear box failure, You put into drive and it clunks, motor revs then just barely goes forward, it has reverse, My guess the drum shot craps, anybody know what model the transmission number is? should I have the trans rebuilt or I thought motorcar ltd had rebuilt trans in stock, You think a trans shop like Amaco could rebuild it, would like to keep the car,but don't want to stick 5 grand into the transmission,

The ZF 5HP24 is used in the 1997-2002 XK8 and the 1998-2003 XJ8 and all will work.
I installed a 1998 XJ8 (AJ26) gearbox in a 2000 XJ8 with a repaired 'A'drum and it still works fine after 2 years. I swapped the rotary switch from the 2000MY gearbox to the 1998 replacement because they have different part numbers and I do not know if they are interchangeable.
It might be cheaper to just replace the drum or find a good used gearbox for around $1000 and install it.
I have not needed to completely rebuild a 5HP24 gearbox. I have a few gearboxes with broken 'A'drums that I repaired and install in customers cars. The 'frictions/steels' are usually OK.
If I do get a really worn one I will suggest a good used and save the worn one for parts.

See Car-Part.com for salvage XK8's in your general vicinity.
A salvage yard down by Martinsville (Brooklyn, IN) has a number of Jaguars in their inventory, and they're looking for $1500 for a 76K mile 1998 tranny. That's about the going price in the Midwest.
If the problem is the A drum, it's in the top of the transmission--not deep down into it. New design A drums are easily obtained.
These transmissions were used in a number of cars, including the BMW 740 and 528's--and good transmission shops are familiar with 5HP24 fixes. But, if any city has good transmission shops, it should be Indianapolis. Just don't let'em take you for a ride.
