Mike

With that build date this is not the origional engine. It might of been mention before and I just missed it. It being changed could have done things.
It possible they could have done electrical work or welding without disconnecting the battery possibly damaging the ECM.
First remove the cam bolts Mike mentioned. I haven't had this problem but I understand that the incorrect bolts can interfere with the cam sensors.[/QUOTE]
This is why I asked if it an AJ26 or 27!

+1 on Pristine........ I've seen many many times on these older XK's and XJ's with 4.0L V8, ECM fails inside on ignition coil circuits. The VVT issue is probably something entirely different.

As for the possibility with the fuel injector, you can try swapping #4 cyl injector to another cylinder and see if the misfire moves.

As for the VVT issue, could be something in the bush carrier, or inside the VVT unit itself. I remember a tech from way back in my early days was trying to cut corners on a repair job, cant remember exactly what he was doing, but he needed to take the crank pulley off, and only used the lock pin for the flexplate. When he went to loosen the bolt for the crank, all the stress went on the internal springs inside the VVT unit and broken on one side. After he put everything back together, he kept getting VVT codes, after chasing his tail and losing his lunch, changed out VVT solenoids, checked wiring, it was the spring inside the VVT was broken. Providing when the timing components were done properly, you shouldn't have to worry about this.

It might pay to have the ECM taken out, and sent off for testing. Its fairly easy to take out, and will be easy to rule out.

I pulled both cam cover bolts and ran with no difference. Also when I did all chain, guides, and tensioners I replaced vvt units with good used ones. Checked wiring to injector today and all was fine. Only test not run was pin to injector body as injector is plastic so will have to remove. Next step I think is to swap injector. Does not look too difficult and if I run into problems with o-rings I will order new set. If anyone disagrees let me know. I'm willing to accept all advice

Hi Dale,
I've just checked Torque; I suspect it's only reporting ignition timing , so I wouldn't assume that all is good.

Still thinking...

Gentlemen, I believe I have truly found my misfire. Was going to swap #3 & 4 injector but when I pulled 4 out it came apart. After ordering new injectors I pulled other side and #5 came apart. Then, while cleaning holes i could see what looked like a rag. Lifted intake and sure enough there it was. Don't know where it came from cause not the type I use. Pics included. Rag is one injectors are on.

Inside the air intake or just underneath it?

Indeed; the Jaguar gods have already included it in their revenue forecast

I could see part of it once injector was removed but had to lift intake to get it all out

Now I know what everyone means by purrs like a kitten. Replaced all injectors today and took for a test spin. Runs good. Thanks to all that chimed in. I probably would not have made it without all of you.

Congrats. Dale, you will not regret the costs now that you have a great running car. Guess some Mech. left his shop rag during a repair? Enjoy the ride!

Congrats! Sounds like a prior surgeon left the sponge in.

It never ceases to amaze me what some "mechanics" do.

Enjoy her, you deserve some road time.

I'm pretty sure that that is a non OEM rag. Had it been a manufacturers rag then it would have cleaned your injectors for you as you took them out.

Great news that you have it sorted. The mental pain experienced when you have an ill cat is not good, but there is nothing better than kicking it down and roaring off into the sunset when it works!!

Awesome that you got it sorted out! These can be very frustrating cars when issues crop up but it is always SO satisfying to sort it out. Would you mind sharing where you ordered your injectors from, I assume it was a complete set of 8?

XK_SL, they were from cs performance on ebay. Refurbished, matched set, flow tested, and 5 year or lifetime warranty.

Dale, curious. Did the injector repairs remove the P1384 and the P1396 codes you had. I was thinking these were seperate issues from the misrire code. A bad injector was not one of the causes of those codes. If it did solve these codes I guess bad injector will needed to be added as possible causes for those codes. I might be missing something, if I am I would appreciate an explanation of how the injector would cure those codes.
