Default Some good advice and I'll see how it goes

Thanks all for the input and I hate leaving a request for info unanswered or unresolved so here's an update on my problem from a few days ago. I let the system stew over the problem for a couple of days (as if the car could actually think about it) and then went out, checked the fluid level for leaks and finding none decided I'd work the pump a bit harder to see what would happen. This time it started to work the latch in about 7-8 seconds and after perhaps 15-20 seconds (I wasn't really counting) the top came up on its own and finally latched itself. I put it up and down several more times and all appeared normal. I've since put the top down several more times without any trouble. I also kept the carpeted cover off so I can check the fluid level every time I use the car and so far the level has stayed right at the proper level.

That mystifies me a bit since it did previously somehow over time empty itself which would indicate a leak but so far nothing has showed up and the level has remained constant. Nothing to do now but continue monitoring it. If it does lose fluid without a 'green shower" I'll pull the rear seat cushion and look there and I've placed some paper towels under and near the pump itself to see if it's in that area.

Id bet money on it being one of the connectors either front or rear. Your doing the right thing though wrapping paper towels around the joints. They will show if you have a leak. I think there is also a connection around the rear of the tank too?

I wonder how much hydraulic fluid must leak out of the system before the top no longer raises or lowers....

Leaks can appear at the connectors and at each cylinder seal. The latch will show the leak in the overhead light and the lift rams you can see an oil residue in the forward side of both rear wheel wells. You do not need to pull the tire just look forward of the tire.

When the fluid level reaches the lower embossed line on the tank it will begin to stop functioning.

No problem. Glad you got it sorted. When I pop over to CA for a break you can show me your roof working !!

Feels good though doesn't it when you sort it yourself. Well done sir, and all that $ you have saved yourself.

Frankc,

I’m fortunate not to have had this problem – yet! But if and when I do, I’ll certainly refer to your excellent write-up. Many thanks!

Vince
