Halfshaft Ujoints
#21
I still have my "Wanner" grease gun in my tool chest !!
I used to use an HP Molyslip grease. This was OK for virtually all of the grease nipples on the Jaguar, and Oh, how many there were !!
As I recall:-
Front suspension top and bottom ball joints (sealed from XJ40 and they lasted longer !)
Wheel bearings
rear hub carrier trunnion bearings
inner and outer UJs
inner swing arm bearings
prop shaft UJs
Have I missed anything ?

Stopped at Jaguar for an oil change yesterday and asked the service advisor if greasing the U-joints was part of the service and he said no. I asked if they would do it anyway and they did. The point is, they haven't been doing it. So if you take your car in for an oil change, you had better mention the U-joints.

How to Check U-Joints
You get the car off the ground then place your hands at 6 & 12 o’clock position and see if you have movement then try it 9 & 3 o’clock. If you have movement from the 6 & 12 position then look at placing your hand on each U joint to find the one that is in trouble. If you have movement from the 9 & 3 position you may not have a U joint problem you may have a wheel bearing that needs replacement. I hope that makes a little sense.

This is true for the 2000 XK8 too.

The rear 1/2 shaft zerk fittings are way down in the yoke on the u-joint and may/should have a plastic cap on them. They are very easy to miss - keep looking.
In true Jaguar fashion they are located 180 degrees from each other. When you have one side positioned to grease the other side is inaccessible. I do a lot of on-off the ramps to finally get to both. Using jack stands might eliminate this process...
My caps have gone missing - I've not found replacements yet. Similar caps are all over my boat's outdrive, they might be a marine item but I still can't find any...

Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and look in the shelving area. The white end caps for the wire shelving will work.

Seems to me there are two on each side on the rear split axle. They are near the wheel. Once you do one side,(with the car on jack stands) you'll have to rotate the tire some with the car in "N" because if one side is reachable the other side isn't.
