Exactly. If the alternator is going off line from a slipping belt, where would the energy come from to power electric steering?

Gotta think things through.........

If you had a problem that lasts a couple of minutes, that rather rules out anything to to with the road and suggests a problem with the car!

And are you seriously suggesting that in a low-grip, low-traction situation the car braked itself and found enough grip to nearly put you through the windscreen?

Yes but the whole electric steering idea is just a bandaid, not a fix.

In response to comments on my earlier post on steering.

yes the belt was slipping from water. this was in my XJR

and about nearly being thrown through the front window. In my XKR when you have your foot on the floor and are going into third gear with the engine on boost and the dsc cuts the engine cuts to nothing it is like throwing out an anchor. So as I said before turn dsc off and drive.

As for how to convert to electric steering. You need to find a steering device which resembles what you have. I haven't looked at the XK8 recently but i think it is rear steer rack and pinion. So you would look for a car which has a similar electric rack and pinion. The tricky part is the electronic controller. There is a guy on Ebay that sells a controller for a commonly used Saturn steering box. Perhaps he could help make a controller for the rack you might find. Once that is done it is merely making brackets, connecting tie rod ends and the steering shaft.
