Default valve stem seals

I been slowly putting the JAG together as time allows. I ordered all of my parts from Steve Pritchard at Nalley. Tremendous help with pricing!

I had my heads pressured checked and the seals checked out. No cracks or warpage. Would any of you replace the seals while you were this far into motor? 74000 miles. Hell, I can still see the crosshatch marks on the block cylinders!

So far I went ahead a replaced all of the hard to reach hoses. For the transmission cooler line, I lifted the drivers side of motor up a couple of inches and slid it over motor mount.

The power steering hose to rack was looking as it was weather checked as well. So I went ahead and replaced it as well.

I forgot to order my head bolts when I ordered everything else. It should be here Monday so I can get back on track.

Am I safe to assume the Jaguar head uses a different type of spring compressor for the head than a v8 chevy etc?

I am still at tinkering along with the Jaguar. The heads all turned out good. I replaced the water pump and found all the vanes broke off so replaced that as well.

Anyway, I am putting the VVT's on, and I wonder if or what is the procedure to putting them on? I don't see anything in JTIS. I have read things mentioning to put them on retarded an amount, but that was about it.

I do see 2 dots on the back. 1 on the sprocket, and 1 on the vvt. Do these mean anything?

Any ideas or can someone guide me along?

This is all that is holding me back from finishing the old girl up!

Thanks!

Look for either:

The excellent Jaguar Engine Course manual posted in several places here as a pdf, search for MotorCarMan.

Some of the upper chain tensioner writeups that include the VVT setup.

And, it is in JTIS as part of the secondary chain tensioner procedure for the NA engines. You have to look through the various years because a procedure that is covered in the earlier year is not repeated in the later year unless it has changed.

Might be a bit late now but I always fit 4.2 head gaskets, the 4.0 type are known for going but I have never done a 4.2 as of yet through failure
