Default HELP: How to raise convertible's rear quarter windows?

Using the console's roof switch I was able to open the convertible top, but I was totally unable to raise the roof back up using the console switch; there was simply no response.

Did a manual roof-raising by opening the hydraulic valve in the trunk, hex-keyed roof lockdown when the roof is back in place.

Now the question is how do I raise the quarter windows? Are there any mechanical means to raise them? I may have a faulty roof switch, and in that case, how can I get around it and hook up something to trick the roof control module to raise the quarter windows? Worst still I may have a faulty roof control module. How can I diagnose that?

TIA

There is no real mechanical way to raise the quarter windows. Only thing I know for sure would work is to apply power to the quarter window motors individually. Involves removing the back seat and the side covers to access the wiring harness for each window motor.
There might be a way to bypass the roof switch, but I do not have any wiring diagrams to even look at. Hopefully someone else responds.

There are 4 relays involved with the rear windows.
The 2 UP relays can be 'jumpered' with the DOWN relays needed to remain in place. (they are switched to provide a power path for the polarity)

The relays are in the boot relay panel next to the battery.

I've had a bad roof switch too.
Fyi:

There are 3 hot wires in the connector at bottom of roof switch. Disconnect the connector. While I'm sure they all use same ground, I will speak of the wires as pairs. Pair 1 roof close & rear windows closed. Pair 2 roof & rear windows open. Pair 3 roof switch light.

How to test for bad roof console switch? Get o/of car. Put key in drivers door. Left side steering: turn key fully counter cloclockwise. Hold. Within 20 seconds wondows all open roof goes down.

Turn key opposite way windows & roof up. If the works but console switch doesn't = defective console switch.

Switch goes for $80 to $120 new.

In a jamb? Get hold of 2 normally open momentary switches (mom means momentary - iow it only connectsthe 2 wires while pressed). Lift rubber pad out of console slot. Remove center console cover.

Drill holes for mom switches left right in depression covered by the rubber pad. Using 20 guage (hook up wire) single strand, solder 4 2 inch length wires to mom switches.

Note I chose 20 guage single strand because 1/4 inch bare wire slips securely into the connector.

Which wire goes where? One side of connector is hot, other side is ground. The roof switch just connects + to ground to move roof and windows.

Obviously 1 pair is illumination. Use volt meter, turn dash illumination up and down. Which wire changes voltage? Thats the one for the light in the switch. Ignore it here.

Thread wire through hole, secure switches with nut. Stick each wire into the female receptacle on the connector. Use tape to secure wire in place (you don't need the pos+ wire slipping out and grounding itself unexpectedly!). Reassemble, you've now got a $5 temp fix till you can find a new switch.

Obviously this happened to me recently. Interesting part: the Bluetooth remote button from discount stereo fits perfectly where my defective roof switch sat! Sometimes you get lucky.

Questions- just ask.

John

Have you checked the pump fuse in the trunk? 40 Amp fuse #14.

It is recommended the roof be raised and lowered with the engine running when voltage is up. The motor will run slower and hotter with low battery voltage.

+ 1 That is the first test that I would recommend. (even easier if one has a Jagwrangler remote)

Yes thats the first procedure I tried. Mines a RHD, and a clockwise key turn would raise the windows followed by the quarter windows; only the first part worked for me.

Turning the key counterclockwise would first lower the quarter windows followed by the main door windows. Only the main windows dropped and the quarters stayed hidden.

So my next move would be to recheck the roof pump fuse, followed by jumpering the quarter window raising relay base for the left and right side, as kindly suggested by the gents in above posts.

Stay tuned for my trials...

The rear quarter windows will not operate under normal conditions until the right rear ram/lift is in the roof closed and the roof linkage is locked. That means the right rear ram must be fully extended resulting in the roof linkage being locked. Until you find the cause of the roof not operating you can go to the rear quarter window relay and jumper it out providing power to operate the windows. This relay is located in the trunk.

As for the roof pump not working you should locate the fuse and relay for the pump and check them. If the fuse is ok then swap with a like relay and see if that works. I would need to know additional information so I can help you troubleshoot the system.
