High Idle

Hi,
I have a question re. my vehicle has a high idle (around 11-1200rpm) just noticed this yesterday. Nothing changed on the vehicle other than had the coolant topped up at the local drive thru oil change; the guy did look at the air box I told him the filter was good as I just changed it last month.
Is this a normal occurrence or some ominous problem waiting to pounce after I buy new tires?
Thanks

Good news on the coolant. ![Icon Smile](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
There is a learning procedure for the idle, if battery has been disconnected for a length of time or reset.
Bring the engine up to temperature.
Switch off.
Restart and leave to idle for 2 minutes in P.
Then select D and keeping your foot on the brake, leave to idle for another 2 minutes.
Reselect P and switch off. Setup complete.
This sets the idle mixture and rpm.

This is to ensure correct adaptive settings are stored for
kickdown operation. Re-programming is done with the
ignition switch in position II a follows:
• Slowly press the accelerator pedal fully through the
kickdown detent to the floor. Release the pedal and
repeat the action.
Derek,
Red1bw quoted this from a Jaguar publication for 2004 XK series.
I've not seen a reference to this previously but perhaps we should do this as wel as the tickover calibration?

JTIS details the steps involved in battery reconnection:
JTIS - 2003 XK8 Battery Reconnection.pdf
Also includes 5 miles of varied driving to enable the ECM to complete its learning strategy.
So that's:
1. window limit reset
2. audio preset reset
3. clock reset
4. Idle reset
5. Kickdown limits
6. Drive Cycle
all to be completed following a battery disconnection!

Free Cloud Storage - MediaFire
Covers all 4.2 Models to Final Series.
It's a much more detailed inspection procedure than for the earlier 4.0 litre models. There's a corresponding Check Sheet. Let me know if you want a copy.

The PDF came from JDHT originally but I've checked JTIS and your memory is correct, it's available under the PDI button.
Strangely, the only PDI manual in JTIS is for 2003 and 2004 Model Years which brings up the same document.
