As written by RandyB
Could you not use a long breaker bar and a socket, instead of buying a special tool?
There's not much clearance and you'll have to flex the fan schroud with the tool, just slightly. For the price of a tool you'll save a couple of hours.

Thanks a lot for the tip about the possibility to raise the fan! I just completed the change of both belts. It is very tight down there, so lots of patience is needed. I'm fairly certain that the same engineer that designed the front of the engine compartment was involved with designing the back seat.

I used this tool for the job. This one does not have a 1-2" drive bar, but well a slim ratchet with a 1/2" socket. With the fan in service position, it just barely fits.

Supercharger Belt: Goodyear Gatorback 4080525
Accessory Drive Belt: Goodyear Gatorback 4060910

Short procedure writeup:

Removal

1. Jack up front of car. (I'm tall, and bending over the low hood kills my newly operated back.)

2. Bonnet to service position (loosen struts with a screwdriver, put bonnet in vertical position, insert bolts in the hinges to keep it vertical.

3. Fan to service position. Loosen the M10 nuts on each side of the fan - not much space there, so it is a bit annoying with a regular ratchet. Lift the fan up in the middle, retighten the nuts.

4. Insert 1/2" special tool in supercharger belt tensioner, pull and slip the belt off the top pulley.

5. Loosen the tensioner bolt (M13) until you have a good 1.5cm of clearance between the tensioner and the (pulley/idler) inside.

6. Slip the belt through the clearance and remove from other pulleys.

7. Insert 3/8" special tool in accessory belt tensioner. Pull and release belt from any pulley.

8. Loosen the accessory tensioner bolt (M13) until you have a good 1.5cm of clearance.

9. Slip the belt through the clearance and remove from other pulleys.

Installation

1. Install accessory drive belt according to scheme. Make sure that the belt is properly aligned. I had to crawl under the car to get the belt to align properly under pulley 4. Leave the belt off the top pulley.

2. Retighten the accessory belt tensioner bolt to 40nm. I couldn't find any way to fit any torque wrench down there, so I just went on feel.

3. Insert the 3/4" belt release tool into the accessory tensioner and pull to give enough slack to slip belt over the top (water pump) pulley.

4. Install supercharger belt according to scheme below. This is easier than for the accessory drive belt. Leave the belt off the top (supercharger) pulley.

5. Retighten the supercharger belt tensioner bolt to 40nm. Same story here, no way I can fit a torque wrench in any way. Hand feel it is.

6. Insert 1/2" belt tensioner tool and pull until you can slip the belt over the top pulley.

7. Put fan back into position, take bolts out from bonnet and close. Then lower car.

8. Grab a cold one and kick back.

Hope this helps!

azeteg,

Good procedure writeup but there's a problem opening the pic 'click image to open in full size' links in your post #22.

Thanks Graham. It looks alright for me here though, no issues to open images in full size?

Thanks for the write-up, but none of the images is visible, either thumbnail or full-size.

Martin,

I've cleared my browser cache but that didn't help. The only way I can open the images is by right clicking on them and opening in a new tab or new window.

This is an issue for several members at the moment. See this thread:

Yes, perfect. I will be printing this off and using it when the belt and the tool I ordered arrive. Thanks again

Martin,

YES - all visible now.

I've deleted my post with the copies to avoid cluttering up the thread.

Nice write up Azeteg. I don't know about the 4.2's but on my 4.0 you don't need to loosen the tensioners at all there is enough room to get the belts out.

No way I could do that, gap was narrower than belt was thick. I actually tried at first, for perhaps 10-15 minutes; almost managed a double knot on the supercharger belt before I gave up and loosened the tensioner.
