If you can hear it.....It Ain't

Yesterday night, I got around to installing my MINA Galleries cold air intake. When I was finished, I fired up the car and drove around listening to that glorious sound. I got to thinking though; If I could hear it, it wasn't sealed to the hood, or surrounding areas, and sucking in hot air.
I ended up cutting pieces of my collection of weather stripping, and stacking them on top of the round tube insulation, that came with the intake. I also cut the plastic plate behind the headlight in half, so it would butt up against the side wall, of the box. After that, I took thin one sided foam like you would use under a truck cap, to fill all the other openings.
It now is a true cold air intake, drawing it's air from behind the headlight, and through the hole in the inner fender.......I will post a couple of pictures, after I see the Chicago Bears lose today.
The end result is a cold air intake, that truly draws cold air, and no sporty sounds from under the hood. I AM going to purchase the neat chrome pipe Mina sells for the intake, and the rear muffler eliminator, with the four tips peaking out the back end......
I know I ruined a lot of sidewalk Jim Clark dreamers out there, but this is the way things are functionally supposed to be.......Be cool......Mike

Nice however.......
I have the Mina intake on my 03, I also have a Scanguage in the car which amounst other things monitors intake temputure.
At speed my intake temp is about 2 to 5 degrees above ambient temp. Now at a stop light it will climb up but personally I'll take the nice intake sound over worring about what minuscule gain I might get from a " cold air intake" should I decide to loose a stop light race against a Camery!
that's why I bought the intake, for the sound!

I took a similar path Mike with my Mina air intake, except that I didn't go as far as he did in sealing off the air box (he's far more thorough and skilled than I am). I removed the snorkel and used expanding foam around the sides and bottom (painted black), then fabricated an aluminum baffle that rests on the rubber seal on top of the box. I couldn't run the baffle over to inside fender due to the hood lift cylinder, and haven't as yet messed with the plastic plate behind the headlight. I used my Torque app to check intake temperature and had the same results as Jandreau in terms of the relationship with ambient air temperature. Yes, the intake temperature rises at traffic lights, but quickly drops down when underway. Probably not nearly as efficient as totally sealing the box, but I still have that great sound!

Here's a work-in-progress picture of the baffle I've been working on for my Mina air box. It needs to be a bit larger, and certainly more attractive, and once I refine the pattern a bit more, I'll make a permanent version that is more aesthetic. As crude as it looks, it substantially lowers the intake air temperature both when moving and even idling at a light. I discussed it with Chris at Mina Gallery, and he found the idea "interesting" (of course I was buying their new intake tube at the time).
