rar, that's a form of a zipped file, right? Whats a .nzb?

 

A .rar file is kinda like a zip .. but much more useful .. compression is not it's primary purpose. It is grouped into "chunks", and if you have a corrupt or missing "chunk" or even a part of a chunk, the poster provides adquate volumes that will by some magic, still give you a completed file. Nowadays, 99% of postings are complete, but if you need only 300k in the middle of a 700meg movie, it Is the ticket. Zip files are most useful for smaller text files, where the compression can be extraordinary.

An .nzb file, is kinda like download shorthand. Download a free proggy like "Grab-It" ... install, and create a file association with it's .exe component with file extention .nzb and you can just double-clik on the .nzb and download multiple files. You can resume after a connection interruption, or even if you choose to pause it, or shut your box down for the night. Very very handy. Resuming download of .zip files has always been daunting after an interruption .. and rarely successful.

Gotta install winrar proggy too. Once Grab-It has completed downloading, double-clik on the .par2 file, and it will check all the files for absolute completeness. Zillions of tunes and movies on usenet .. u-name-it .. I was looking for the Haynes XK8 book, as my local parts guy doesn't show it in his 2010 Haynes catalog ;-(
