'98 XK8, 90,000 miles. The engine is idling a bit rough and I was thinking of removing the fuel injectors and having them professionally cleaned. I did my usual due diligence, found a number of posts on cleaning, but little that really addressed the removal and installation of the fuel inject without breaking them. The workshop manual makes it sound very easy, just popping off the fuel rail and lifting the fuel rail and injectors out. Then reading other posts, there is far more to it, pulling the injectors out individually, carefully, one posts stating there was only minor damage to the base of the injector. At the cost of the injectors, I rather not break any of them, even in a minor way. Anyone have a video, or good advice on the removal and refitting of the injectors? Any good injector cleaning people?
For cleaning I used Injector rx out of Houston and was happy with turnaround and test report. Please insure the package if mailing - usps put my package through a meat grinder in a swimming pool (as far as I could tell) and I lost 5 of the 8 injectors, but I had paid the insurance and injector rx promptly took care of the claim and sent me the money - not their fault and their packaging was good, just could not stand up to the the usps special treatment.
I have only removed XKR injectors so far, which I believe are different from XK8, so can't fully comment on procedure, other than not having a supercharger in the way is a good start.
When i first got my 99 XK8 2 years ago, I did an overall engine inspection which included removing the fuel injectors for a good look. There wasn't any real hassle I remember, but I did note that the wiring harnesses were brittle and I was worried about the injectors' retaining clips. Can't remember if they were metal or plastic. Still nothing broke and all I remember was that it was relatively an easy job.
This is the only pic I have of the area showing how easy access was. This picture was taken with the cam cover off when I was changing this gasket.
I do remember that I was surprised how clean my injectors were and the only thing I did was replace their O rings. Previous owner may have had them cleaned and/or regularly run through a fuel cleaner in the tank. I did find my fuel filter at the left hand rear wheel, was also clean too.
Good luck and hope you don't find the injectors have bad injector tips. These are not cheap parts.
injectors are easy to remove. Relieve pressure on system. there is a small metal clip that locks the electrical connector onto the injector. The clip does not have to come completely off - I used a small jewler's screw driver between the connector and clip, gave a little pry - enough to disengage the clip and then pull the connector off. I did not remove the rail - just unbolted it and then rotated it upward enough to where I could remove the retainer clip around the injector and pull the injector out. I don't recall taking pics - but will look to see if I can find any
Have you checked your spark plugs lately? I pulled the plugs on my '97 when I got it, and several of the plugs were fouled ( 6 of 8 were different brands!). Just something to consider.
I just installed new injectors '99 XK8 convertible. No supercharger. When you reinstall. I installed the injectors in the fuel rail first with clips. Pay very close attention when installing the clips. Make sure they are seated in the flat small slots at the top of the injector. Slim coat of lube on O rings Failure to do so means the injector is Not attached to the fuel rail properly and will leak.
Hope this was useful
