Hello all, I'm looking for some ideas from those more experienced than me...
The Instrument cluster was dead last week with a beep and 'Er' showing on A/C control. I checked all of the fuses and found them OK.
I brought a cheap 2nd hand Instrument cluster on e-bay and when taking the facia etc.. off my wife opened the car door and the LCD panel lit up! When I switched the ignition the Instrument cluster seemed to work, but I continued installing the 2nd hand unit. When It was installed the LCD screen was very dim but everything else seemed to work. So I put the original back in, and again it worked but the LCD screen was very dim.
Later on I checked it again and the LCD screen was normal but the A/C beeping and 'Er' continued. I then also noticed that the RH indicator light and high beam lights were not working.
2days later the Instrument cluster was dead again but no A/C beeping or 'Er' message.
Today Instrument cluster is dead and A/C beeping and 'Er' message is back. I used the IDS which found the attached communication errors.
So is it a intermittent Instrument cluster fault, a electrical/wiring fault affecting the Instrument cluster function, or something else I haven't considered??
Hey. So, if I remember correctly, there is a common problem that occurs on the instrument cluster that could cause this. Some of the solder joints fail and then the problems start:
Thanks for the links, I refitted the 2nd hand unit which has functioned perfectly for a couple of days. So it is looking the the Instrument cluster. I will keep this one refitted for while to make sure then look at repairing the original one as the 2nd hand unit has 20k more miles on it!!
