iPod cassette adapter

iPod cassette adapter
Hi all - new to the Forum. Just picked up a 2005 XKR and getting used to it. It appears that most of you who run iPods use a cassette adapter. I bought two different brands (Griffin and Philips) and both have the same problem: they only seem to play the left channel. I dusted off some old audio cassettes and put them in the deck and they play fine - full stereo, both channels. Does anyone else have this problem and what brand is working well? I saw a Sony in one of the photos. . .

Hi
I'm also new to the forum (at least, I haven't posted much). I've tried a number of FM adapters and found that they all had the same problems:
1. They would not lock onto the mp3 signal for very long before a stray radio signal would interrupt. Maybe this is a problem in my area only...south central PA. Not a lot of tall buildings.
2. Signal quality seemed lower than that of the cassette shell. High frequencies were especially affected. I've got two of them; one is a Sony and one was a cheap one from ebay (maybe $9). Both work very well.
Is it possible that the wire from the cassette shell is preventing it from seating properly in the player?

Kevin,
Assuming you do not have the balance of your HU to Left or Right, I would first look at your iPod or iPhone headphone input. For example, 1st generation iPhones' have a recessed headphone jack that needs a very specific narrow mini-plug or an adapter. Otherwise, you will get sound from only one channel since the plug is not making proper contact.
The other thing that frequently happens (if not a 1st Gen iPhone) is that people get a little tentative (for fear of breaking something) and don't put enough pressure on the jack to properly seat it all the way.
I currently use a Phillips Cassette adapter in my '97 XK8 with my iPhone 3GS and it works great.
Hope this helps.

I got the Monster Cable brand cassette adapter. Got it from Amazon. Right away I noticed that the piece that contacts the cassette head is about 3 times bigger than the cheap one I got at Target. Sounded a LOT better. The cheapy one was really flat, no highs at all. The Monster unit has twice the dynamic range to my tin ear.
And in Southern Cal, the FM stations are very crowded so the FM transmitters are hit and miss depending on where you are. Also, the Monster unit is black colored with a black cable and is much less noticeable in my black interior XK8.
Not all cassette adapters are created equal. I personally can recommend the Monster one as a higher quality unit that works well for me.
