Default Jag Wrangler / WhiteXKR - Upgrades

I just recently had some of the Jag Wrangler (aka - White XKR) upgrades done to my 2001. I had the Center 3 Gauge conversion (remove Nav), Engine Temp and Oil Pressure upgrades installed.

I must say that I am very happy with the Product (s). The Engine Temp now reads actual real time in +90F ambient, just a 1/2 to 3/4 tick over center. The OBD Scanner was showing at about 205F.

The Oil Pressure now also reads real time. It goes from about 1 full tick above center at 40 mph to a couple of ticks above 'red' when sitting at idle for the Traffic Lights. I did not get the 'lablels' installed. I have a 98' Jeep that I am very used to 'real guages' on, so I am comfortable without the labels.

Only problem was with the switch from the Nav Unit to the Center 3 Gauge, was the 'wood dash'. White XKR gave me a lead to one on E-Bay. Made an offer and it was accepted. Installed the newer wood (out of a 2002) in it the other day and now I can really see how much the original wood on the 2001 was faded, glazed and clouded over (even though a UV Blocker was used on it). Anyway, now changing all the wood.

Great product, great install (White XKR did the actual install) and I am very satisfied that I no longer have 'dummy gauges'...

WXKR does amazing work. I'm very satisfied with his product and customer service, plus he's a heck of a nice guy.

I believe he is saying the engine temp actually climbs above its normal spot when the ambient temp is above 90

Definition: The ambient temperature is a non-specific phrase used to describe the outside temperature. When taking the temperature with a thermometer, you are getting a general idea of the temperature of the surrounding air without taking into account the daily maximum and minimum temperature. Ambient temperature also does not take into account the humidity or wind in the air. The amount of moisture (mugginess) or humidity in the air can create higher temperatures which will cause the heat index to increase. Winds can also play a role in how cold a temperature will feel to a human. The wind chill factor can cause the air to have a perceived lower temperature.

To measure the ambient air temperature, all you need is a thermometer. When calculating the relative humidity in the air, the ambient temperature is also referred to as the dry bulb temperature. The dry bulb temperature is a measure of the dry air temperature without evaporative cooling.

Thank you for the discourse on ambient temp. I'm a chemist so I have a fairly good understanding of the concept. My problem is that the temp gauge now reads above the midpoint on the scale at 90F, whereas I thought that would be more like 195F. So where does the needle go at operating temp, if it's above midpoint at ambient?

I read his post as when the outside (ambient) temp is 90F, his normal engine operating temp puts the needle at just a bit over halfway.

Yes, I believe that is what Bill was saying.

The RealGauge scale midpoint is set at 185 degrees F coolant temperature, which matches the factory gauge operation. The difference is the factory gauge stops at 185 and does not rise again until the temperature is over 230 F, whereas RealGauge continues to linearly increase.
