just bought and already a problem, can you help?
Hello, I am new and my name is Buzz. Ijust bought an 02 XKR 100 that is just out of warranty and has about 31K miles on it. It has been completely babied and I am so proud to have her...but I already have a problem. I was driving last night and the radio just turned itself up to full blast (no excessive ambient noise and no change in the amount of noise in the cockpit), so I turned it off. Turned it back on, and it did it again. Turned it off and on again and it was fine, but then then engine stumbled a little and then I got an error code about the gas cap. Redid the gas cap and now the amber engine light is on and has not gone off. This all happended all in about 10 seconds, so I suspect it is all realated to one another...and sounds electronic to me. I did not really notice anything unusual about the gas cap when I reset it.
As a new buyer of a relatively unknown new car, obviously I am a little spooked that I bought a car with gremlins. Can anyone shed some light on this type of problem? I was curious if there were any after market error code readers that I could pick up to get more informed about what is happening to the car. I am not the worst mechanic in the world, but this car is way over my head. But if this thing is gonna put out a bunch of error codes, I think maybe I should be informed.
And also, any thoughts on after market extended warranty from a third party? I ckecked today at the dealer and they informed me that since I did not buy the car from them, they cannot provide any type of coverage.
thanks a million and I hope to spend quite a bit of time here learning more about my new car

Just Bought and already a problem... imagine that
Get used to dealing with these problems. They dont end. I have ONE tip... KEEP DRIVING it. it seems that every Jaguar I have owned decided to have problems after I let her sit for a period of time.
With that said. I have been doing a LOT of electronic work to my XK8 recently. I have all my electronic charts scattered out still. If you email me at davidlthies@hotmail.com I would be happy to help you try and diagnose this problem. Tell me in detail what is going on with it and every light that lights or does not light that should. also, include any other previous problems that it has had.
Previous problems is an important thing. Did you know that the fog lights and the aux water pump (that feeds the cabin heater) are interlinked on some models, but not all models??? That was a FUN one to find!
I use alldatadiy.com for my schmatics and general shop books. It is SO worth the money! !
Email me. I love helping others when I can.

Was this car sitting unused or not used very much before you bought it? I have had my 2005 XKR for just over a year now and, since it was a 3rd car in a 2-driver household, there were several days that would go by without it being driven. I also had noticed some electrical gremlins (memory seat function wacky, a couple of false warning messages, etc.) and when I asked one of the service guys at my local dealer about these the first thing he asked was whether or not the car was used very much. He mentioned that these types of problems are indicative of cars that are driven only occasionally and once I started driving more regularly (thus keeping the battery in better shape) the problems should diminish. This is true as since selling my extra car and using the Jaguar as a daily driver there have not been any of these electrical gremlins.
