Leak @ Oil Filter Mount

Leak @ Oil Filter Mount
Yesterday I did an oil and filter change on my 03 XKR. I used a Purolator PureOne filter...the same exact one I used at the last oil change. When installing the oil filter I noticed it stopped tight before going 3/4 of a turn. I experienced the same thing when I did the last oil change so I didn`t worry about it as I had no leaks last time. This morning I see I have a small seepage leak at the oil filter mount. My question is...can I spin off the existing filter and *quickly* put another one on without draining the new oil and without having 8 quarts of oil flowing out onto my driveway?

I would give it a "small" tighten (1/8 turn?) before I replaced it. Can't hurt if you watch it.
Also did you prep the gasket with a drop or two of clean oil before you installed? This helps lock the seal to the block.
But I will say 3/4 of a turn is not normal. If you take it off, better check the threads and make sure it hasn't stripped.

I did lightly oil the gasket as always. I`m sure the threads are not stripped, and I`d be afraid of stripping them if I tighten any further. I hand tightned it and it stops firm like it is at the end of the thread depth. Do you know if all the oil will come gushing out if I try to replace the filter without draining the oil?

Someone else may chime in here with more knowledge, but I'd be concerned about the 3/4 turn limit on tighten. My '01 takes multiple turns before it begins to tighten. Hence the name spin filter. Otherwise your next filter may have the same issue or worse.

Two possibilities come to mind:
1. faulty oil filter thread
2. oil filter adaptor (arrowed in red) is loosened or threads damaged
Either way, the 'problem' filter has to come off.

Good points !!
You'll have a similar amount come out as you have when you do an oil change. The oil is in the pan at a lower level than the filter. That's why it's important to use a filter with a non-return valve so it doesn't drain back into the pan as the vehicle stands.
