Default LEDS

Just replaced all the rear bulbs with LEDS. I came up with a bulb failure warning fix that doesn’t need a capacitor. Couldn’t find anywhere to deal with the 300 degree heat problem so I have another solution. I am going to drive for a couple of weeks to be sure my solution works then I will post pictures and results.

Welcome to the forums Maury,

As you have already posted an Intro, I've moved this post from New Member Area - Intro a MUST to XK8/XKR forum.

Maury,

Welcome to the Forum. Lots of good fixes on this forum for installing LEDs for the rear bulbs.

What is the 300degF heat problem? Hope it's in the Engine Bay and not the rear bulb units?

Default LED fix

The 300 degree temp came from the surface of the resistor recommended to prevent the bulb failure warning. If it were mounted to the body, some of it heat would be dissipated but I couldn’t find anywhere for that in my XK8. My solution was to install a small 5 watt incandescent bulb in the circuit. Found room for 3 in each taillight assembly. Totally self contained.

How hard to replace the rear bulbs? I have been slowly replacing any bulbs with LEDs. A bit tentative about pulling rear lights.

Super easy. You don't even need tools. Just pop the tail light cover access from the trunk and you can then replace the bulbs. If you want to remove the taillight assembly, it's not much harder, but you will need a screw driver.
