location of transmission dip stick and plugs

I have a 2001 XKR--Can't seem to locate the transmission dip stick--is it accessable from the top of the engine??
Also--I wanted to change the plugs--I assume they are under the smaller covers located on the valve covers but when I removed the cover there were electronic modules. I attempted to pull one off thinking they were the plug wires leading to the plug--but even with some gentle tugging they didn't budge. Is this where the plugs are located??
thanks

First off, there is no dipstick for the tranny, because it's a "sealed for life" unit that Jaguar doesn't expect you to touch. Rediculous..believe me, we ALL know. There is a way to change it, but it's extensive...if you need more info, let me know. As for the plugs, there are small nuts that hold down the coils and the coils will come out very easily once the nuts are removed. It's one nut per coil.

BMW has the same "lifetime fill". Like the lifetime of your trans. The only way to add or change is from a fill hole on the side. Temp of trans and fluid is critical as that determines when the trans is 'full' and fluid begins overflowing from fill hole. gordo

2001 XKR have a Mercedes Benz Tranny W5A580. These trannys do have a dipstick located under the center cover piece that covers the bulk head (firewall). Here is the catch though you need a special dipstick to check the level since it doesn't come with one!.

The dipstick is a special tool from jaguar and we only have one in the shop, so no I can't get it. You can buy the fluid at a Mercedez Benz dealership but the fluid is like $50 bucks per quart. Your best bet is to take in to a Jag shop were they have the tools to do it.

The W5A580 uses MB fluid like JHE said. We made our own dipstick I will try and measure it and give you spec to make one. If you look on right side of block (Passenger side for LHD car) by throttle body you will see black oval shape plug. This covers dipstick tube. Word to the wise though. If you are not having problem with trans, dont mess with the fluid. Those Tranmissions are very durable and we have seen then with a couple hundred thous. on odometer and still trans is great.
