Default Locked Out

Hi,

I cannot get into my 1997 XK8 using the alarm fob, is there a way of opening the doors? There does not appear to be any key hole in either door.

Help please.

Regards

I don't know about European cars but all of them over here has a keyhole along the drivers door handle. If they didn't have a key hole that's one of the stupidest designs I've heard of.

Called recovery and with the aid of some bent ires managed to get the doors opened. Why is there no keyhole?

There definately is not a keyhole on the driver's side.

RC Sign - the car was originall built for the US and brought back to europ in 2008.

Can an alternative lock be fitted, ie one with a keyhole.
?

Regards

Do you think the handle may have been changed in the UK at some point and a UK passenger handle fitted on your drivers side?

I would think that a passenger door handle would not work on the drivers door You would have the lock rods on the wrong end. They are at the back of the handle. i would think you could buy a drivers door handle and lock set. The tumbler would have to be rekeyed. This must be a coupe.

A UK passenger door handle would mount the same as a US driver door handle, wouldn't it?

Of course. Jaguar makes handles for both sides with and without Key Slots.

But what idiot would fit Non Key Slot handles to Both Sides?

How about this scenario? The car needs a new door whilst in the UK, they pick up one from a breaker bolt it on, hook it up and everything is good, but no one considers the door lock as the fob is doing the job fine.
Just a thought.

Hi,

Thanks for all the comments. the cxar is US spec and was brought back to the UK in 2008 and then to France where I bought it last year. I had a friend visiting at the weekend who owned a 1998 XK8 Coupe and when he use3d the key to open the boot, the doors opened as well which makes some sense. Is there an electrical connection that is maybe missing on my car or could it be something as simple as a fuse or a failed relay? How could I trace it? I visited a breaker in Essex when I was last back in England and he is breaking a RHD 97 XK8 and can let me have the complete locking mechanism for either door. From which door should I get the assembly? The alarm system is not OE but an aftermarket Cobra system, does anyone have any experience of these alarms?
Hope someone can help.

Regards

Matthew

The devil is always in the detail!

So the OE alarm system is completely bypassed, replaced or supplemented with an aftermarket Cobra installation?

My XJ40 had an OE Jaguar fitted Cobra system. Although it was armed/disarmed with the usual fob, there was a Cobra control module under the bonnet which had a key for deactivating the entire system. Too long ago to remember the model but this information and the serial number was on the control unit. If you can locate a similar control unit label, this will help in obtaining further details on the system. My X300 was similar to the XK8 setup so Jaguar had clearly dropped Cobra by then.

I can't think of any reason to change the OE security system for an aftermarket one unless there was a serious fault. Not surprising your XK8 is behaving oddly.

Graham
