Loose Steering Column?

Loose Steering Column?
Again, thank you guys in welcoming me to the board and graciously answering my questions. I have another question about my 2002 XJR (almost 92K miles). I have noticed that the steering wheel has about a 1/2 inch play in it. I can shake the steering wheel, and although the up/ down (tilt) function of the steering wheel works fine, the in/out (telescoping) function seems to not be working. I can hear the steering movement motor running, but it won'f telescope and ther is some play in the steering, meaning I can shake the wholw steering wheel and column. Thanks in advance!
Regards,
TB

My first car - a 20-year old (at the time) 1949 MGTC had nearly 1/4 of a turn of play through the steering box. This was quite normal at the time, though I'm not entirely sure how I managed to keep it on the road.
I would personally be rather concerned if there is anything wrong with the steering, nowadays, in case there is something broken or a potential catastrophic failure. I'd get this checked out asap, with a reputable indie.

There is a Technical Service Bulletin on the play in the steering wheel that I cannot locate at the moment but, if I remember correctly, is easily fixable. I do not have time at the moment to search further but if someone else doesn't post it I will later today.
The 'reach' issue is a common problem, which I also have, caused by a 3" piece of what looks like speedometer cable between the motor and the drive gearing. The little cable is about $50 at Coventry West (.com) because they bought the tooling to make them. They are not available without the entire motor/gearing assembly from Jaguar. There are a number of discussions on the subject with considerable information and does not appear to be a difficult repair. I just haven't had the time yet.
Looks like you have some excellent entertainment ahead.

I found the following link to the 'play' you describe:

Here is the TSB I referred to but I now think the above may be more what you are describing. Have not seen that post before and am not knowledgeable on steering tensioners.
You obviously need to download the free JTIS file.
Let us know what you find.
