RE: Low coolant level light
FJT,
I went searching for the reply on the low coolant light and never found it. I have an '03 that just started having a low coolant light when it is cold. After I drive a few minutes and get the temp to normal, the light goes off and stays off. I have checked and re-checked the coolant reservoir level and never been able to add more than an ounce or two and once it was full, the level is staying constant. I had the system pressure tested 3 months ago and it passed but this was 2 months before the light started coming on. I can barely get my fingers into the aft, drivers side of the reservoir and feel what I think is a float. It seems to be able to move up and down about a half inch on the column the sensor fits into.
Do you know if this float is what the fluid level sensor is reading? Also, do you know how much travel the float is supposed to have? There feels like there is some scale on the column but I cannot make the float move up any more. Also, do you know the symptoms of a bad sensor? The local Jag dealer did not think a bad sensor would give this type or error but did not offer any other help except bring it in and we will look at it.
Any help would really be appreciated,
Doug

RE: Low coolant level light
The level sensor should be cheap. You can pull it out and replace it. I have seen both the sensor and the expansion tank (which comes with new sensor in it) cause the problem. If I had your car I would replace the expansion tank first.
The float is not something you can feel. The sensor sits in the bottom of the tank. It has like an induction pickup and is excited by a ring in the expansion tank that moves up and down around it. The sensor itself stays dry. If you are not loosing coolant I would do the tank.

FJT,
Thanks for the quick response and advice!
I do not think I am loosing any coolant at all. That is something I have been watching very closely since this started. The float I was describing is the ring you mentioned and ifI strain real hard, I can reach it with the tip of my finger. Do you khow what it is about the tank that warrants replacing it if there is no leak? That seems odd to me as I would have expected to change the sensor first if there were no leaks.

The float hangs up. Not serviceable. The sensors work well and don't fail too often. Like I said, tank comes with sensor in it so you are killing two birds by changing it. Also, flush cooling system out. Often times, people mix coolants and it causes congealing around thermostat and housing and also in the expansion tank.
