Default Lucky Me

As usual, I bought a car with 1 year only parts. It happened on my Porsche 356A due to a mid year suspension change, A 73 Javelin, that happened to have different windows, because the center of the roof was lower than the outside. The list goes on, and it appears my 99 XK8 is no exception.

I have been looking for a roof console with Homelink. The cars up to 98 had one version, and 2000 on up, has another version. The other 2 versions can be had for $45, plus shipping. Shipping is $20 no matter how close they are to you...

The ones on Ebay are around $150 with cracked surrounds, or other defects, meaning they were removed by apes. It appears the 99 overhead convertible console with Home link is around $80 plus you guessed it....$20 shipping. My wife is buying it, because she likes how far I came with the car, in such a short time, without spending a mint, and has even ridden in it.

This is something she has only really done in the 928S, partly because she didn't have anything else to ride around in for 2 weeks paid vacation in Europe, until we watched her loaded into a container bound for New York.(the car not Brenda) The 928 I asked for problems, by having it specially built for me, by the factory.....My story, and I am sticking to it......Be cool.....Mike

Are they actually different in the form/fit or electrical connections?

As I understood it, the differences year to year were whether the sender supported the rolling code type of opener or not.

Might be much less costly to buy one of the old hand-held garage door openers. I still have two of them (made by Stanley) - one in my S-Type and one in my Ram. Their 9-volt battery lasts for years and years. I keep them in the console where they're easy to get to. Sure works for me....

According to all the interchange books, the 99 stands alone on this part. I am doing this, to be able to put one of my 2 remotes that came with the opener, in one of my closed cars, when I drive them.

Around here people take your opener, and find out where you live by your license plate, and one morning when you wake up....TA DA!!! Totally cleaned out garage.

I bought a 99 Homelink upper console and so many other pieces from the 99 flood car, that the guys at the yard now know my name and address. They say I am single handedly stripping that car. I would buy the perfect convertible top, except it is blue, and protecting all the rest of the goodies that are in the car. If someone wants a beautiful black interior this car has it. The car only had 41,000 miles. They sold me the Homelink console for $90 INCLUDING SHIPPING.......Be cool.....Mike

According to the NADA guides there were "no significant changes" for the 1999 model year.

You must have found one of the insignificant ones.

Mike,

My 2000 XK8 came with an addendum to the owner's manual on setting the console remote with a rolling code garage door opener. I followed all of the insructions to the letter, but could never make it work. If you'd like, I'll scan the addendum and send it in a PM to you. It's not in great shape (must have gotten wet in the past, but it should be legible.

Thanks for the offer Max, but mine works. It just looks like He11.

I made a button, by cutting about a one inch piece of aluminium fence tie. I put it in my vice, and put a small flare on the end of it. I then put 3 sizes of heat shrink tubing on the flared end, and put it up through the hole.

I used about a quarter inch of ballpoint pen spring, and put a vacuum plug on the end of the aluminium stub and spring, so it would push in, and the spring would pull it down. I put a brake bleeder rubber on the end, so it wouldn't hurt my finger, when I pushed it.

It worked using the original printed instructions in the book. If you want, I will send you the electrics, of my Homelink. It should screw right into your housing. If it doesn't, you can just keep it. Use the original printed instructions in your book, or I will send you a copy of the page from my book, to get it to work. It works on my opener, that has a rolling code. Hope this helps Max.....Be cool....Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the offer, but I'm wondering if it's not the garage door opener itself. It works with the remotes, but I've tried playing with the dip switches on it, and it still won't respond to Homelink. In terms of what really matters, this is low on my radar.

I didn't have to mess with the dip switches, but I did have to remove the cover, and there was a half inch square button, that said Learn. I figured my opener was designed for an intellect like mine. If it was lit up I still might have missed it.......Be cool....Mike

Thanks Mike, I'll give that a try. Idiot-proof are my favorite kind of directions.
