Default Manual trunk key

Re 2003 xk8

Had a dead battery after car was in storage for the hot summer here in AZ. Of course trunk won’t open with dead battery.

previous owner gave me 3 keys. None of them would open the trunk. the green one I suspect is the valet key which is expected.

with fresh battery (thank you AAA) the trunk will open with remote control and button on trunk but not with any key.

keys don’t turn at all so I am suspecting lock cylinder is frozen. Sprayed silicone in key hole but no luck

Is this strictly a mechanical lock or is there some electronic communication between key and lock?

suggestions?

The key is mechanical, i suggest opening the trunk then spraying the lock opening with wd-40 and the move the key back and forth to free up the lock. With the trunk open there is no tension on the mechanism. Once the key turns 90 degrees close the trunk and open with the key. Once freed up try to remember once a month to open the trunk with the key.

+1

Two separate methods of releasing the latch (item 1):

1. ELECTRICAL: using the REMOTE retracts the actuator (item 3) which pulls cable (item 2) to release the latch.

2. MECHANICAL: turning the KEY in the lock barrel (item 4) rotates the lever on the back which pulls cable (item 5) to release the latch

Default Trunk lock

Tried to work on the locks today None of the 3 keys will rotate the lock cylinder
tried prying the egg shaped cam on cylinder and no movement. I don’t see any issues with the connecting cable
Loosened mounting bolts in case there was some binding
The inside the trunk emergency release seems OK
I have been spraying the key hole with PB blaster penetrating oil but no luck

To be sure I wasn’t trying to open trunk with valet key all 3 keys open and close glove box

any suggestions

All looks clean and shiny in there, but either the cable is stuck, or the lock cylinder is.

Judging by GGG's diagram, it looks like the cable can be separated from the actuator by lifting the outer cable upwards then unhooking it from the nylon cam. If not, then remove the circlip and pull the cam off the cylinder.

If the lock still won't rotate, then the cylinder is stuck or, possibly, key and lock don't match?

Someone may have changed the lock and that key was lost? Possible.

Does the key work in the doors?? Maybe the ignition switch was changed and that's the only one you have, meaning all 3 are the same. Just a thought. TM

Default Manual trunk key resolved

OK I think I fixed it. I removed the lock to be sure it wasn’t a cable problem. When I removed the lock I also discover the roll pin in the picture. Without the roll pin the lock cylinder rotates. I believe the roll pin’s function is the limit the penetration of the valet key. I don’t have a valet key so no issue

reassembled without the roll pin and everything seems to work fine.

many thanks to those of you who contributed. Could not have done it without you

UPDATE. I believe I am in error and the roller pin goes into the slot Horizontally on the key cylinder. Not sure of the function but it works without it.
I’ll do another R&R to investigate. Probably use the key every 2 years when I have a dead battery

Couldn't remember the last time I opened the trunk of my wife's 2006 XK8 with the key. Just tried it and the trunk opened perfectly. That powdered graphite treatment a couple of times per year tends to keep the locks functioning smoothly....

A bit late to the party as you've already refitted it and it works, so I'd leave it be.

Another brave soul also took his trunk lock to pieces, and there's a TSB here, courtesy of member Gus:

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/TSB/...XJ40/76-64.pdf

It's old and relating to the XJ40, but it might help someone who ends up with a bewildering collection of washers and springs on the workbench...

The TSB shows that the locking pin is installed between lock cylinder and housing. With pin installed cylinder won’t rotate. Removed pin and lock works fine. Since key is used so infrequently I will live with it but I keep wondering what is wrong
