Default market value question

I'm curious about something.
I'm in the midwest US. Lets take an '06 XKR for example. If I look for that car for sale anywhere in the US, a dealer might ask $23-28K for it, but if I look up that car on KBB, the KBB value (to buy from a dealer, everything apples to apples) it might say, 16K is how much you should pay.

I've never seen such a spread on a car. What is the realistic number you would likely pay?
Thanks for the help.

The prices on XK8/XKRs seems to be on the rise. Summer months the prices rise especially on the convertibles. I think the KBB prices are slightly behind the times as the '03-'06 models have a higher demand now then in previous years. I paid almost $4000 above what the KBB price was for my car but it had full service records and the original paint and interior were almost perfect. Still had to spend the winter taking care of the little issues that crop up.

Hi Typhoon, ouch... Prices, and the such vary from coast to coast as well as book values. You can find a dozen or so books for value out in the world. Some used for insurance purpose only, other trade in values, bank use other while giving you a loan. They are all based loosely on auctions with adjustment for their own purpose. In essance, value is that which a person is willing to pay. If Reatil Book value and Car priced at $ 40k, 25 lookers, no buyers, value for that car is wrong. Best bet is to use vehicles for sale, papers, computer, etc in your region. As many as you can find. Throw out the very high and the very low, average the rest for your area, you have a ball park. Condition, original owner, very low or hi mileage, etc play a factor. Good luck, Rich

IMO 96-06 XK8/XKR are fast becoming classics. Book values for collector cars are meaningless. I keep an eye on the market for these cars just out of curiosity as I bought one 4 weeks ago and I have yet to find another one in the same price range as I paid. The prices do seem to be on the rise.

I paid $15500 for my 2005 XKR and I'm happy. The guy was firm at $16500 but I had the funds available and I moved fast on the car. He obviously was a motivated seller and not a haggler..

If you're patient you'll find your idea car. Offer a fair amount and be willing to pay a little more for the right car. Supply and demand

That sounds like quite a bargain but I have not really kept up on pricing lately. I had sort of felt that 2005 or 2006 vintage XKR with reasonable miles and in very good condition would still be somewhere in the $20K+ range.

There is an 05 or 06 XKR for sale here for 13K w/70k miles, I was offered 6k (trade in) for my 01 and it is in really good shape. But that was last Nov., convertibles are like old cars, they go up in spring and down in the fall.

You guys are very lucky!! On my side of the pond, I just paid $34K for my 2004.5 XKR convertible with 53000km in pristine condition. Now here is the kicker, this was a very good price for this vehicle and I had to jump at it immediately without haggling because there were already three other buyers lined up wanting her. I waited 7 months searching the net daily until this particular model popped up for sale. This is how scarce they are here.
When I bought mine, there was a 2006 XKR in the same condition and also low kilos going for $44K. This gives you guys a bit of an idea of what they go for in my country. There is not too many of them around and are generally considered as very upmarket prestige cars. Most of them are generally in very cood condition because those who can afford to buy can generally afford to get them serviced by the agents and replace with OEM spares.

I am actually green with envy when I see the general prices of these cars in the States.

I just had my car appraised by our new insurance conpany. Even with a dead clearcoat, mine commanded a value of $17.5k. They said, if the paint were better, it'd be about 20 - 21k. Either way, that's a 100% profit for me, since I got the car almost for free.

I never looked at a car as a great investment opportunity although I've bought and sold a few over the years for a profit. The best investment concerning XK8/XKR's was Nigel Thorley's book on the cars. I think I paid $20 three years ago for a new copy. Now it's listed on Amazon at incredible prices.

Just hope my R will appreciate like that! Wishful thinking.

Wow those are crazy prices for that book! Did the guy die or something? Why is his book so expensive?

I believe Nigel is still with us. He's known as a well respected historian of Jaguars. It's crazy I should spend more time polishing my book.

I also noticed these go for high prices outside of the US. Would it have paid to buy the car over here and ship it?

Look at the completed listings on ebay. You will find a number of cars sold for $6000 - $8000, some with fairly low mileage. This is the best source, to me, as it has the actual selling price in green if the car was sold.

No, unfortunately our government has all angles covered. We cannot import any left hand drive vehicles unless they are true classics or vintage. When you do meet the criteria to import a vehicle, they hit you hard with import duty and taxes that it is just not worth it at the end of the day. So what you save by getting the car for 50% of the going RSA price overseas, you end up paying in shipping and import duties.

For many years, the government protected our local motor manufacturing industry by making it almost impossible for anybody to import a vehicle. The local industry could basically dictate the price of the vehicles and have steadily pushed up the prices over the years. They literally had the monopoly! It is more of a free market nowdays where the import regulations have been relaxed and other brands are imported (new), but sadly the prices have not come down. The importers are making a killing as they buy at normal overseas prices and sell at the very inflated "normal" price in RSA.
Our used car market is based on the new car costs and therefore extremely high compared to other countries. Do yourselves a favour, take for example a new Toyota Yaris or something similar you have in the States and compare the price of that same new vehicles price in RSA. You can use an exchange rate of about Rand 9.5/US$1. You will be horrified what we pay! Easy 50% more than in the States or Australia.

Early XKRs sell for around 10-20% above kbb. 03-06 XKRs are very hard to find so prices are going up fast. Mileage is everything on these cars. High mileage cars sell for a lot less. Right now, 97-99 XK8s are a real bargain. Grab one while they're cheap.
