Max tire sizes for 18" double fives?

time for new tires and figured this is a good time to try different sizes as long as they don't rub or wear poorly. As always, I'm a pretty sporting driver but have finally accepted my XKR coupe is a GT and not a sports car.
Anyone have perspective on living with different sizes?
255 width fronts?
275 width rears?
255 all around to reduce understeer? (yes, I realize rears are wider so would not move them to front for rotations)

I really like the factory double five look and am running 255/45 front and 285/40 rear because they have the same revolutions per mile (same diameter). I also am running the 9" wide rims on the front also and they fit perfectly. The extra inch in width is split, half inch inside and half inch out which keeps the factory wheel pivot specs. and the 255 fit better and they do not rub. The 285s fit in back with no clearance problems but i installed 20mm spacers to bring the wheels out and make it look better. In the future I might widen the back rims an inch so the 285s fit better. Over all i am extremely happy with the look and drive. You just have to buy some used 9 inch wheels. I posted the pics just look me up and see what you think.

Sure would appreciate a few pictures of the 285s on your car. Did you have any clearance issues without the wheel spacers or are wheel spacers mandatory when using 285s? I'm due for new tires and a picture is worth a thousand words. Gota check if there even are 285/40s for my 19 inch wheels. The Jag is used as a fair weather cruiser and any degradation in ride is meaningless for the amount of time the car is driven. The 275s on the car at the moment are not crazy expensive and they ride fairly well. The only reason I'd want 285s out back is purely cosmetic. My other 'sports car' (the word luxury is not a part of that cars description) uses/needs 295/50/15's out back and rides like a brick. Our daily drivers are just cars/appliances with everyday tires.

I searched for and found two more 9-inch Double Fives, so I've got the 9s on the front and the rear. 255 45R18 on all four corners. Not the widest option...but certainly wide enough for a great stance....and with the 9s on all four corners, I can rotate the tires between front and back. This extends tire wear quite dramatically and lowers my cost for tires over time.
An asymmetric tread design with different rim widths front and back means no tire rotation...and much faster tire wear.

Hey, weiss. I'm running 275/40/18 out back with no issues for the last few months and 1k miles at least. Been daily driving the heck out of it lately. Cool that you got the 9s for the front as well! I don't think I've seen that before and can't comment on the clearance, but out back, you'll have no problems (probably not with 280 either really- I wish I had gotten spacers 5mm larger in the back).

I like the look of factory rims with a more aggressive tire. I put the 18x9 wheels with the 255/45s on the front fully expecting them to rub. they fit well and looked good with no rubbing. I then purchased two more 18x9 rims and fitted them with 285/40s(same revs per mile as the 255s) and then added 20mm spacers to help fill out the rear wheel wells better. I do not use spacers on the front because it changes the factory wheel pivot point when you turn the steering wheel. With the extra girth I thought the car started to mark its territory but alas it was the convertible top hydraulic fluid leaking on the driveway. The 285s did not rub without the spacer but it looks better with them.
