Gus -- I see that you are the true author of that PDF documentation! Very Well Done!
I especially like the tip about the open end wrench that you customized for this repair.
I have an 01 Vanden Plas that has more front-end room that may not require my having to remove the fan housing, etc.
I think I can just remove the front hoses to gain full access.
I do have a new thermostat from previous work done.
Is it difficult to reassemble into the new housing?
I have no idea what I will be getting "into".
Any other tips?

Jochem I agree. The nav became obsolete <5 yrs after it came out. The R with the mercedes gearbox seems like a winner, athough any of these cars should be desirable 20+ years from now. For the thermostat, make sure the bleed pin is at 12:00. The pin or ball can be removed according to some and that's what I did. Don't know if it makes any difference.
