Default Parking Next to a Yugo? Perish the Thought!

Look, if the parking lot is not more exclusive than that, it doesn't deserve to have a Jag parked in it.

BC, and others in our general age group; we are so fortunate to be going thru our never ending mid-life crisis with such a lovely car, as the XK8 or XKR is, to haul our decrepit carcasses around in.

I live in a fairly small city / large town of 35,000 population and home to many of Phillips Petroleum retirees. Almost daily I see many of these retired geezers making their way thru the dangerous ages of 60’s thru 80’s in a Corvette. I feel sorry for their misguided attempt at eternal youth.

they could be driving a Jag and actually enjoying these declining years like we
are.

Hello everyone,
I bought this car. Its a true beauty and its in perfect condition - cosmetically!
There are a few mechanical problems with it. Parking break is broken - if you pull it you won't be able to release it. Driver seatbelt lock is functioning but the housing is broken. Car feels bouncy - right rear shock is leaking. Supercharger is whiny, a bit louder than normal I think.

I didn't take it to the mechanic yet, but I will. Ill post the update after is anyone is interested to follow.

Hi,
Congratulations on the new Cat and welcome to the forum.

You are always going to find some issues on a 16+ year old car:- even a low-mileage one, but you're in the best of company here to help sort them out.
Change all the fluids out so you have a baseline and work from there.

Handbrake:- just pull up to set. Pull up and hold in the button while lowering to release.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the sympathy Zray. No corvette for me. I just bought another Jaguar, this time a 2019 I-Pace. This will be our new family car, probably eventually replacing our LR3.

Congrats to the new XKR owner. I hope you can get it all sorted and enjoy it fir many years.

I won’t mention the sounds I make getting in and out of my ‘02 XKR. Some days it feels like the car has been lowered 6 inches.

But I’m still smiling, so it’s all good . Once I’m in, any memory of the entry / exit discomfort is forgotten and forgiven.

Yes, always interested in a rehabilitation story.

note; changing the supercharger oil is a relatively easy job. And often the S/C noise is reduced afterwards.

Be sure to have ALL the fluids changed, including the rear end lube & transmission. New fluids can add years to the life of these components.

congratulation it is a beautiful car.
Certainly replace all fluids, since it was driven so little I would drive it @ 500 miles or so and then check the shock leakage again. You may find that the fluid movement swells the seals and they start N to operate properly.
Enjoy the car!

Yeah I was basically pre-geezer (46) when I bought my Corvette in 1995. I had it for 14 years until it was "replaced" by my 2005 XKR. I didn't regret a moment of owning the Corvette and it was remarkably reliable over the time I owned it. Sold it to another guy on the Corvette forum and as far as I know it is still going strong. Everyone should own a Corvette at least once in their life, although the newer ones are nowhere near the spirit of the the older ones.

gtryapit,

Don't let anyone tell you that you spent to much for the XKR Coupe! Granville alerted me to the BAT Bidding and told me he was going to make a try at getting the Car. If he had not been in on the bidding, I might have considered going for it myself....Mine has 1,015,000 miles on it now and I love it more each day but never mind my Man, you got a great deal @ $32,000.00. It's like a new Car and you just got it about $60,000.00 cheaper than the Day it came off the Showroom Floor....What a Deal!

Apparently, you are new to the Forum, so I assume this is your first XKR....I'm on my fourth and I love it much more than the other three, as it has all the goodies, like my 2003 Coupe did...

When you get time, please shoot some Photos for all of us to see and if you have any questions concerning anything about your XKR, please let me know! I have, with the help of others here on the Forum, made several enhancements to my 2005 Coupe that I would be happy to share with you!

By the way! I think your XKR has the "R" Package and if so, those Shocks are special and they cost much more than regular ones....You want to make sure you replace things with like type and quality parts! You XKR has some systems that not all XKR's have..

Good Luck to you!

Billy Clyde @ Cinco Ranch .

My midlife crisis buy was I suppose the XK-150 FHC I bought when wife was pregnant with first child and sold shortly after birth of second. Seven years of motoring bliss I still cherish. I have to be content now that I can have the XK8 as I certainly can't afford another XK-150 at today's prices! Maybe if the gods favor me I can eventually snag a nice example of my dream XF Sportbrake.

I’m glad I had my two e types, and Triumph TR-4a’s (& the Honda CBX , Kawasaki H-1’s too) when I was in my 20’s (the 1970’s) and could give them a good thrashing without worrying about their value or worrying about throwing my decrepit back out of kilter.

If I owned them today they would just be pampered toys and not exercised properly. Better to have the wild memories than to presently fuss over those cars like they were delicate flowers.

Hi @bcprice36 ,
Thank you.
Yes this is my first my first XKR, in fact my first Jaguar.
So this is what I ordered so far from the dealer: 4 shocks, 2 front upper strut mounts, transmission oil pan, fluids for rear differential and supercharger. I also ordered billstein lowering springs, but not sure if I will install those.
Please let me know what else you might think I need to replace while doing work on suspension.
Few pics I snapped with my phone...

That's a beauty! Certainly outshines my black XK8 coupe.

Are you sure the shocks need replacing? I'd expect a lot more than 13K miles from them.

Of you want to recoup some parts costs I’ll gladly purchase those used shocks with 13,000 miles on them.

Hi @michaelh
Its not the miles - its the age.
You can see it yourself if you look at the auction pics.
I also had it checked by mechanic - 3 out of 4 shocks leaked out.

If anyone has any suggestions what else I should replace in the suspension please let me know. I would really appreciate it.

Why are you ordering parts from the dealership? You will save significant money by ordering from the various aftermarket suppliers for these cars....

Additional front suspension items to consider: Upper and Lower Control Arm Bushings, Front Sway Bar Bushings and End Links, Shock Bump Stops, (Note: your front Springs should be in very good shape and not need replacement).
