You do not need a computer to check the the fluid level. The car does need to be elevated and level, four jack stands will do it. Then loosen the fill plug at the the right rear of the transmission while the transmission is warm. Then start the engine, engage R then D for a few seconds, return to N or P and with the engine running remove the fill plug. Fluid should be dibbling out when the fluid temp is 30-50 deg C. I use a indoor/outdoor thermometer, the sensor of which can be pushed into the fill hole. Note that the transmission temp. climbs rapidly, so I let it cool down before doing this.
Not an easy job without a hydraulic lift, and the exhaust system is very much in the way.

Default checking trans fluid

I am ready to check my trans fluid today, but I am not sure which plug is the fluid level check? I see 1 small allen plug on right (rotyary switch side), and 2 small alan plugs on left, with 1 large plug close to bell housing? The car is raised and level.

Still have not recieved my shop manual I orderd..

The right front of the trans has a 19mm plug almost touching the bell housing and the right cat converter. That must be it.. I got it loose, the trans fluid looks dark like motor oil.

No, the fill plug is right rear. Either 8 or 10mm hex key, can't remember which. If you take it out when the engine is not running you will lose 3 or more qts atf.

I removed the big one 19mm right front before reading this post, it has a spring inside behind the plug. It looks like my trans is low on fluid...
I see the other small bolts they are Allen key bolts, 2 on left, 1 on right, 1 in right rear. The one at the right rear I can not get out as part of the trans housing is in the way.

As I mentioned earlier, it is easier to break it loose when the transmission is hot. It is a 8mm hex key and you will probably need a piece of pipe as an extension. Removing the exhaust bracket at the back of the trans. will help.
Sometime you may want to change the fluid and filter, but that's another discussion.

I still have not repaired my XK8 transmission. I did check the fluid level to a certain degree, but not the accurate check. It does have fluid in it and I believe enough. Yes it is the plug at right rear of trans and a 10mm hex. I could not see it originally while laying on my driveway lol. Still have not checked the rotary switch. I did locate a used rebuilt trans at a Jag shop with the updated heavier drum in it for $1,600. plus an additional $800. for installed.

Not sure what to do right now as I am low on cash...I did take 65 pics of my car and put on my website for sale at $5,000. The pics are at: www.KevinGerard.com

There are arrows and each end of the film strip, if you click on the right arrow the film strip should show more pics, 65 in total. Then click on the pic in the film strip to view full size. Let me know how that work.
The other thing is that car gallery link of differnt cars but I need repair that one.

Got it to work - have to scroll back each time to see the enlarged image.

The engine is impressive. Clean as a whistle without being OTT. You can come and clean mine any time you like!
