Need information on setting timing.

Joe,
I suspect the confusion is because the "special timing tool" which fits in place of the CPS must NOT be used to lock the engine to remove the crankshaft pulley (harmonic damper) - neither the tool, nor the flexplate are strong enough to take the torque required. So ..... there's another special tool which fits on the crankshaft pulley (harmonic damper) to get this off. I think you will find that this is the only really difficult part of the job - access is limited, and even when the nut is loose, it's sometimes very hard to shift the damper.
Best of luck - let us know how you get on !

Ok so the timing chain broke while the car was idling. That definitely contributed to not bending any valves. The car has 60,000 miles and not a spec of rust. We replaced the whole timing chain setup with the new metal tensioners and guide rails. Now all the covers have to be put back on. Thanks for all your help. I didn't take many pics but will post up a few.

Would like to buy your cam tensioning tools. 2000XK8 49K Going to change my cam chain tensioners, water pump, and thermostat this spring as preventive maintenance. Can I get all these parts in one kit and if so where? Should I get Jag parts or a ford kit for the 3.9 lincoln engine? How much for the tools? I seem to be hooked on these cars and hope to buy another one, or two depending on wife.

Yeah, we sorta like them too!
May I suggest that since you are are upgrading the coolant system that you add the following to the list if they have not been addressed. Your car is 15 years old and needs attention to rubber/plastic parts.
Thermostat tower changed to aluminum . . . paint it black. The original plastic one is going to leak at some point.
Radiator cross over pipe. The original plastic is going to leak at some point.
Upper and lower radiator hoses as well as the short hose from the cross over pipe to the thermostat tower.
Not really a kit available that I am aware of. The Ford/Lincoln tensioners as well as the gaskets are just fine but the rest of the stuff is Jaguar specific as far as I know. FelPro Lincoln gasket sets are the best deal. I recently did all this and shopped the internet for prices and found that SNG Barratt, this forum's sponsor, had the best prices after their member discount. Ask for their catalog as it is a great technical reference.
