Thanks michaelh! The first one told me what I needed to know. I had been searching but the key words I used evidently weren't quite spot on. I'm going to hook up the scanner tomorrow and see what I can see and learn a few things. Appreciate the links!

Well, I believe I have finally resolved the 171 code pestilence at least this chapter. It would appear that it was the result of a variety of problems. The brake booster tube connector at the throttle body was broken, VVT seals were bad, oil dipstick was not sealing at all, the oil fill tube was loose, MAF sensor questionable and the wrong spark plugs were installed by previous owner. After about 500 miles of in town driving as well as some hiway miles, the CEL is still off. I was prepared to check the fuel trims but my reader is not capable of doing that so, for now at least, I have to trust the engine computer to let me know if there is an issue. I love driving this car and it gets lots of attention from passersby. Thank the heavens for the forum or I'd still be scratching my head in frustration. As soon as weather gets cold I'm going to tackle the brake switch that is purported to be a beast of a job.
