New Toy - door locks
Gents,
I picked up a 2000 XK-8 which I'll be going through. It runs and drives nicely and is in good condition for 107K miles.
The doors and boot lid don't lock/unlock via the fob. I hear a chirp when I hit unlock but no action. It locks both doors via the the key when used manually.
Appreciate any thoughts/insight anyone with experience on this can share.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi tom welcome. Tell us more. Does security system work with key fob and or manual key in door?
Is valet on? If on button pushed and valet on dash does not function though key fob button should.
Do doors auto lock when you put in gear? (Acknowledged this is an option but most cars seem to have it)
Battery checks ok? As you will see strong battery is important in more ways than you can imagine.
Inside car door shut. Can you lock unlck both sides by moving one doors handle?

Perhaps the fob is not programmed to the car properly. You could try reprogramming it.
Start the car. Turn it off.
Key in ignition without turning to any position.
Hold turn signal in the flash to pass position, pulled towards you.
Turn key one position (aux) while holding the turn signal handle towards you.
Flash the turn signal handle towards you 4 or 5 times and you should hear a confirmation "chirp" from the security sounder. Also the security light next to the park shift lever will flash on.
After the chirp press all the buttons one at a time on the remote you wish to program listening for the chirp after each press, or a different sounding error tone meaning the programming didn't work.
To program two or more remotes, which will be required if more than one will be used, follow step 5 procedures one remote after another until all have been programmed.
Turn off the ignition and test all features of the remote(s).
If you did not get the initial chirp confirming the programming, or learning, mode, there could be either a problem with the security module or a problem with the procedure. The flashes after turning the key require a certain amount of feel, very rapid or very slow flashing will not work. The 4 or 5 flashes should take about 3 seconds, not rapid fire.
If your having difficulties, check to make sure the remote(s) have good batteries and are placed in the remote correctly, or change the speed of the flashing of the turn signal handle.

Gents:
I got the car back and was able to check out your suggestions.
1-the doors and boots lock/unlock with the keys but not with the fobs
2-Valet turns on with button and deactivates upon use of key on boot (not with fob)
3-Doors do lock when put in gear
4-Didnt get to check battery
5-doors do lock and unlock when moving one handle
6-I conducted the fob reprogramming routine
7-I got the chirps and lights as expected and heard a confirmation beep as i pushed each of the 4 buttons on both fobs
8-Tried the routine several times but none of the functions work on either fob
A couple of additional points/questions:
1-the "chirp" sounds more like an electronic "beep" than an alarm "chirp", am I gettiong the right sound?
2-One black key starts the car and so does the valet key. The other black key will turn the ignition on but will not crank the starter/start the car.
Appreciate any additional thoughts you have given the new information.
Thanks,
Tom
