Default No Throttle response

Hello, I have a 1996 XK8 with a intermittant fault, in the last couple of days there is occasionally no respnse from the throttle, the car will work fine for most of a trip, then when i have come to a halt when i try to move off there is no response to the throttle pedal, the car will still move forward in drive but there is no increase in revs. when this happens there are no warnings on the mfd and restrating the car cures the problem.

Any ideas on where to start looking for the fault, as it is fixed on restart I would assume its a computer or sensor at fault.

had the car for a year now and always been able to sort any faults out by finding something on the search function of the forum, but this time a search brings no anwsers.

Regards and thanks in advance

There was a Service Action 514 that covered a recall for the symptoms you describe. A ECM reprogram or throttle body replacement was the solution based on your VIN. Unfortunately for you the recall has expired.

There is one potential out; if you can demonstrate that the car was in a main dealer prior to Dec 31, 2009 for service and that the recall procedure was not done you have a point to argue. The replacement will only be done once.

Here is a link to that Service Action:

. . . and welcome to the forum!

Cheers for the info, thought the tsb was for cutting out at speed, not at idle so didn't delve further.

car has been out of dealer service and was laid up for a number of years so I doubt I will get anything from them. worth a try in the new year though.

Are you talking about a throttle response problem where you have too much slack in the throttle cable? Recently on this forum, a lot of guys were talking about taking the slack out of the cable on thear cars really make them perform better. One of them even mentioned that his problem was caused by a floor mat that got in the way. Tell us more about the problem. Do you have a lack of power, or a response problem? Have a happy new year.

If I recall the TB replacement has expired. Before I go to replacing the TB I would check and clean the TB plugs. Although without the trouble codes it is hard to identify the problem I would go to the plugs first. This link will help you in finding the plugs http://www.gusglikas.com/AutoRepTB.htm I hope this helps.

Martin,

thanks for the info, dont think the problem is related to cable slack as it cures itself on restarting the car, thanks for the info though, somthing else to check in the future.

when the problem occurs there is no throttle response at all, the car just stays at idle.

thnks for the link to the pics, will try cleaning the plugs, wonder if it could be caused by ice or water on the system, the only time this fault has occured is when the car has been left for a couple of days in -10 or so weather and only occurs when the car is warming up.

I would not rule out the weather conditions but for now clean them up make sure they are tight and dry and put it together. I use a dielectric paste after cleaning and it works well for me.

Is there any way to identify if the action has been carried out? (eg different part #)

I occassionally have this same thing happen. Go to pull away from a stop, and engine does not respond for 4 or 5 seconds. Can be scary pulling into moving traffic.
My vin falls into those in the service recall.

I don't visit the Jag dealer if I can help it, so don't know how forthcoming their service dept would be with an enquiry regarding whether previous owner had this done.

This TSB should help you to identify if your car was a candidate for the TB replacement or the re-flashing of the ECM http://jagrepair.com/images/TSB/Jagu...ion%20S514.pdf I hope this helps.

Just call a Jaguar Dealer and ask if there are any outstanding Recalls or Service actions for your car. Give the VIN and they will advise accordingly. Recalls are issued by manufacturers and/or Governments so they vary from market to market. Service Actions are faults that are known to occur. They may or may not be repaired free of charge.

It will not hurt to ask!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for that, guys.
My VIN is one of those for complete throttle body replacement.
I suspect that this would have been carried out, as original owner had all service done by dealer, and even upgraded tensioners and water pump.
It would be reassuring to know for sure though.
Service action mentions a sticker on the replacements, so will have a look for that when, and if we are in at the throttle body.
My "dead spot" symptom is quite different to the cutout sysmptom described here, so I guess it indicates a different issue perhaps.
It only happens very occassionally too, but if it gets worse and needs attention, I'll check with the dealer before digging too deep, just in case.
Thanks for your help.

I had a host of TB related issues that all went away when I carefully drilled a pilot hole through the main TB plug and used a small screw as a set screw to make ABSOLUTELY sure it stayed fully connected all the time. All my intermittant problems disappeared immediately and have been gone for a year now.
