Not sure what several buttons do
Just bought a used 2001 XK8 convertible and it did not come with the main owner's manual. Most of the vehicle's functions I figured out myself, but can someone please help explain the following?
1) What are the two buttons next to the shifter that have an "S" and a picture of a gauge on it?
2) Does "valet" mode simply keep the trunk from opening, and once activated, how do you turn off that mode?
3) There are several buttons clustered in a circle to the right of the instrument panel that look like they are some kind of trip computer or information/message center, but I have tried pushing the buttons and can't seem to do anything. Can someone clarify these buttons?
4) The J shifter starts at 2. Does that mean there is no "low" 1 gear?
Also, does anyone know where I can pick up a manual cheaply? Finally, is it normal for the lowered top to flap a bit while driving on the highway? I don't have a boot and am not even sure if the original vehicle came with one.
Thanks!

RE: Not sure what several buttons do
1. The button with the S is for sport mode and when it is raised the shifts on the left side of the J shifter can be used. The other button is to turn on/off the cruise control.
2. Keeps trunk from opening with the valet key or if someone breaks into the car and tries to open with the dash button. It can be opened with the primary key, key fob, or with the dash button after the car is opened with the primary key or fob
3. Those are for resetting the trip computer A & B. The easiest way to become familure with them is to just work with the buttons.

Item 4. When in sport mode in the 2 position the transmission starts out in 1st gear, whereas in drive it starts out in 2nd gear. The gears in sport mode wind out more, or as the book states it, "When sport mode is selected the gear shift points are extended to make full use of the engine's power reserves."
Good for dusting off snot-nosed kids in what they think are hot rice-burners or others of like mind, if your into that sort of thing.

Unless the earlier models differ from my 2005, the button to the left of the shifter is not for cruise control but is for setting the speed limiter, which prevents the car from exceeding a pre-set speed.
I also really never use the Sport mode. I prefer to just start in 2nd position (first gear) and upshift manually.

You can download a copy of the handbook in the "sticky" section

also, check under the spare tire, the dealer I bought my from told me it was common practice to put them there.
Just realized this is a revived very old thread

I do hope the GUEST who posted the question in February 2007 has long since found the answer. One button he never did find was the forum registration.
