Oil cooler replacement

Oil cooler replacement
Some time this summer I'd like to replace the oil-cooler (small mist leak).
This may sound dumb but I've never done this job before but, is it wise/essential to drain the engine oil first (probably at service time) to avoid any oil-a-gushin' - or is there only a little leakage from the pipes even when the sump is full?
Also does the cooler need filling with oil before connecting the return pipe - is it possible to cause an air-lock in the oil system?
Lastly if I'm feeling bold I might change the flexible oil-pipes as well . Don't have a hoist but can jack the front a reasonable height, is that practical DIY?
Thanks.

I would also recommend flipping the brackets so that the cooler sits up higher. I scrapped mine a couple of time before flipping the brackets. I had a small leak and used weldbond on it which fixed the leak until I scrapped it again. Then I put in a new one and flipped the brackets. No issues since. Also, very little oil came out when I changed it.
