Oil filter stud came out with oil filter 2003 XKR

Hey Guys,
Had an interesting development yesterday when I went to change my oil on the 2003 XKR. I took the filter out and noticed that it did not match my new filter. The male part that the filter screws into, I think it is called an oil filter stud, came out with the filter.
At first I simply thought that the parts store had given me the wrong filter so I went through with the oil change and put the old filter back in. Once I finished, I did some research to figure out what filter to buy and entered the part number for the older filter. Sure enough, it looked just like the new filters I had so somehow the part that the filter screws into has come off with the filter! There is always something...
Has anyone encountered this before? I have probably done 30-40 oil changes on a number of cars and never encountered this. I find it odd that this is even possible and would have thought the oil filter stud would be secured to the block. Any recommendations on how to proceed? Also, my plan was to replace the filter and then top off the engine with new oil since I just changed it yesterday. Is there a problem with doing this?
Thanks!
Corey

Take it out and get a bolt with a hex head that is that size inside or close and with the bolt double nutted use that as a tool too hold the adapter in a vise etc and unscrew the filter. Use the same tool to reinstall and snug in the block. I see this most often when people cant read. You know the part where it says hand tighten and then 3/4 turn. Not crank the crap out of till it has to be removed with a air hammer. We have a guy that does this here and i have made him remove some of his handy work. His responce is"but mine dont leak" uhm yep, mine dont either and you can get my filters off. The filter becomes tighter after gets hot on the engine

Gotcha, thanks for the advice on the removal. Will work on that too. Ha and you are spot on with the filter. I was thinking that I must have tightened it a bit too much. Oh well, you live and you learn. Definitely will not be repeating this mistake! Would you be fine with not draining the oil in the oil pan once I get the new filter on?
