Original telephone and bluetooth
Hi All,
I've read a lot of posts about adding bluetooth for music streaming and whether it can be used with the cars original phone kit and i think i may have found the solution on another forum.
This site https://www.discountcarstereo.com/bt...ategory_id=431 has a lot of kits suitable for jaguars including the XK8 and each has different capabilities and integration methods depending on what you need. The one in that specific link connects in to the CD changer cable for the audio inputs but also has connections in to the original phone system to allow bluetooth calling.
My questions relate to the original phone system. My car is a 2001 4.0 coupe and although it has the buttons for a phone there are no signs that it ever had one in the centre console, i have not removed it to check underneath though.
1. Ho can i check if my car had a phone?
2. How can i check what type of phone was fitted?
3. For one of the phone kits on discountcarstereo i need to know if my phone had a 10 pin male, 10 pin female, 14 pin male or 18 pin male connector. Any ideas how to check that?
Bluetooth phone calling isn't the most important point for me, really i just want the music streaming but if can get the new phone system to work it would be a bonus and i would spend some money to achieve it. I don't want to use an FM modulator or have something that looks non standard though.
Thanks
Kevin.

I think you already know the answer to this; open the centre console and have a look what is in there. You may find a loose connector for the phone or you may find it's already plugged in to a harness that runs to the back seat where the phone module lives (if fitted). You can identify which connector you are looking for from the number of pins and the wire colours. Check your wiring diagram to find out what your car is fitted with.
The options are yellow 14 pin connector:-
+12 v bat pin 4 brown with red stripe wire
+12v ign pin 5 green wire,
mute pin 6 blue wire,
audio + pin 7 blue wire,
audio - pin 8 blue with yellow stripe wire,
mic+ pin 1 white wire,
mic-, pin 3 green wire, and
mic sheath pin 2, braided
Or White 10 pin connector:-
RT2-1 = Purple/Red Audio input from phone to stereo line level negative
RT2-2 = Purple/Pink Audio input from phone to stereo line level positive
RT2-3 = Purple/Orange Ground this wire and the radio will switch from music to the phone audio through the cars speakers. Most car
kits have a wire for this that does ground to mute so you can connect directly to this wire.
RT2-4 = Yellow Factory mic positive lead
RT2-5 = Braid Factory mic negative lead
RT2-6 = Black Ground
RT2-7 = Blue/Yellow ACP network positive.
RT2-8 = Brown/Purple Battery positive at all times fed from fuse #5 (5A) in the RH heelboard fusebox.
RT2-9 = Light Green/Yellow ACP network negative. Note: the ACP network is used for the radio button features for the phone.
RT2-10 = White/Green Key switched power fed from fuse #10 (5A) in the RH heelboard fuse box.
If you look into the face of the 10-pin connector, pin #1 is at the top left and pin #10 is at the bottom right. The pins are numbered
from left to right, top to bottom.

Odds are very much against having BT fitted as an OE option. It was extremely expensive and few original buyers in the UK opted for it. The earliest fixed Motorola M8989 had a cradle in the centre console cubby box as did the later Motorola StarTAC phone.
This is the 14-Way connector under the centre console on my 2005 XK8 4.2-S:
The earlier white 10-Way or this yellow 14-Way plug should be there even on non BT equiped vehicles. However, PO's and Audio Specialist butchers can do wonderful things to wiring harnesses when connecting aftgermarket accessories!
The BT module is behind the rear seat back:
Even if the kit is there, it's way out-of-date and little use now.
