Pardon the controversy
Hope this is posted in the right place, and pardon any controversy. I'm actually interested in as many points of views and information as possible on this.
Been working my *** off lately and saving up a good deal of money and as I look around I see two cars selling at a comparable price.
You have lightly used 2010 XFs (usually 4.2); and the XK and XKRs 2007 and older, ranging from lightly used upwards to 100k mileage. Both cards appeal to me greatly for different reasons, and curious on other's inputs. What you would or have already bought in the same position.

So the choice is between THREE models:
1. XF (2010)
2. XK8/XKR (1996-2006)
3. XK/XKR (2006 onwards)
It largely comes down to whether you need/want 4 Doors and a useable rear seat or not. If you do, then the XF is the only choice.
If you don't need passenger capacity, then an XK8/XKR or XK/XKR is more fun!
I had an E-Type in my twenties and then, with family commitments, a succession of Jaguar saloons. With no children at home, a 2 Door was once again practical and I've been back with them for a few years.

Choice 3 isn't as realistic. The price range of the 2010 XFs and and the XKs around 2006 are $20-35k. 2007 and up XK's tend to cost about double that unless they've been in a wreck.
I realize comparing the two cars is like comparing apples to mangoes, and I have to say I'd be buying them for two very different reasons. The XF would be a unquestionable upgrade to the x-type i'm currently driving day-to-day. The XK would be a "driver's car." Only used on nice days off. Something that makes me unable to wait for summer days off from work so I can take out my convertible XK (though I like the look of the coupes better.) With the XK I feel like I'd have to keep the x-type as a beater car while I keep the XK garaged.

I have both. A 2010 XF and a 2002 XK8.
I think you're comparing a 2010 XF and a 2007-8 XK. Those are in a similar price range. But the XKRwould be a bit higher.
If you ever need more than one other person in your car, you'll want the XF and believe me, they both turn heads!
I opted for an older XK8 so I could have both!!

If you're still working and saving, it could be narrowed down to a 2014 by Easter!

It to 26 YEARS of indecision to finally pull the trigger and buy my first Jag.
"I" understand.

Definitely wouldn't buy anything that old. As much as I love the look of it I do want something I can drive every day and not worry.
The way i see it. XK... Convertible... For dream cruises, summer weekends with nice weather only. But if the beater car breaks down "WOOHOO! Driving my XK while this POS gets fixed!" Did I mention convertible?
XF... NEWER! Car I'd use every day. Better interior (IMHO, but how can you compete with the sky?) Did I mention NEWER?
Somehow I'd feel better about putting the miles on an XF and an XK. I'd drive the XF every day and be very happy. The XK would be my baby.

I use my 2002 XKR as my daily driver, top down everyday. I will pass 150,000 miles this week or next. It is very reliable, a pleasure to drive, solid, and a compliment magnet as there is never a day that someone doesn't admire it. Now, I live in Los Angeles, so we don't have the weather issues that might prevent year round use, but it is surely capable of being used as an everday car. Having said that, I just purchased a 2010 XKR coupe a week ago with the thought that by alternating a couple of days a week, I can extend the life of the 2002 for years.
Although, I've only driven the 2010 a few miles, I have already noticed in comparison, both likes and dislikes (and this will be the subject of a future post), however, I still like driving the 2002 as much, probably more, and am pleasantly surprised at how it compares to a much more "modern" car.
I don't think anyone could go wrong with any of the choices.
