Default Periodic ABS/Traction warning light

On my 2000 XK8 with 65,000 miles I get the ABS/Traction waring about 3 times a week. It will stay on for 1 to 4 ignition cycles, then go off.

I think the connections at the wheel need some attention and cleaning. I've heard that accumulated brake dust and road grime can trigger problems.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

If not that, you are probably looking at the ECU.

I too have the intermittent ASC/Traction Control ABS warnings come up. How much is a replacement control unit? Is it difficult to install?

Check your sensors and connections first then you look into the repair or replacement of the ABS Module.
This might help http://www.gusglikas.com/images/Auto...e%20Repair.pdf

Oh my goodness people! Clean your sensors before doing anything else. It only takes an hour or two, it's as easy as changing a tire, and it's FREE! Here's the instructions:

Also, someone recently just cleaned their sensors by simply spraying them with WD-40. I'm not sure where that thread is. I think brake cleaner would work better, but if you have some ramps it's as easy as driving up onto the ramps, crawling under the car, and spraying the sensor with cleaner. You could do all four in five minutes. Make sure you spray the sensor end and not just the outside of the plastic housing. Look at the pics in the link in the previous thread to see where to spray.

Thanks sir for the excellent instructions and I do intend on checking these this weekend. However, I mentioned this to the dealer if it was a possible cause but he said my system gave an error code about some pump thing and that was usually indicative of the module failure to the tune of $2800 :-(

I sure hope you're right though!!!!

Hey, I just posted a response over in your other thread about the front brakes. While you have the wheels off to clean the sensors, you may as well go ahead and change the brake pads at the same time. No point in taking the wheels off twice unless you're planning on letting the shop do the brake job. Changing those brake pads is really pretty simple.

Check the abs sensors first, and before you replace or open ABS control module, check the connectors to the abs sensors. I notices that the cable for the abs sensors was being pulled when you turn left or right. The left front tire abs sensor was being pulled so much that it actually failed. I cut the black cover enough to expose the red and white wire. and noticed that the white wire failed. I added a two inch extension to both wires. Solder them both to the connector, kind of tricky to get the wire pins out. then I used shrink tubing 2 times for rigidity. re installed, Test drove. no more ABS lights or other warnings.

I agree, definitely check and clean the wheel speed sensors first per Reverend Sam's FAQ. Very detailed and helpful.

However, if that doesn't work the link Gus posted helped me fix my abs problems.

All,

This is a great link. Step by step sensor cleaning. It seems like people have had really good luck with this approach
