I'm in aviation, so it's turbine engines, hydraulic motors and electric motors.

And by the way, it's pronounced "tur-byne" not "tur-bin".

If your a NASCAR nut, you now know why they have lost so many fans.

People who work for/with them and all the guys in the garages and elswhere, always refer to the cars as having an 800 HP motor, they even call the race tracks "Motor speedways".

Alot of the fans have then decided that they could go to the track on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and enjoy seeing all the little car's go around and around, and enjoy a peaceful quite afternoon, because electric motors don't make much noise. Are they all susprised----WHAT the ----???-- when the race starts and they hear all those 800HP engines come alive. MaMa says to daddy--"Never Again"__so they sit at home in front of their 65 inch TV, volume Off and ejoy a quite peaceful Sunday afternoon watching all the little car's go around and around and around------"Bring me another beer mother".....

Yeah. That's what Mike on Wheeler Dealers is always calling a car- "a proper motor". However, he also says "I'm going to meet with a chap CALLED Jim". Shouldn't he say "...a chap NAMED Jim"?

It is not that anyone would refer to an electric motor as an engine, but I do recall someone explaining the difference to me in detail. Of course, in that setting we did indeed write reports in technical language. That is why I knew that, technically speaking, there is a difference.
It is also interesting to me that you live in Baton Rouge. From the early to the late 1990s I also lived in Baton Rouge. I worked at a nuclear power plant, River Bend Station, outside of St. Francisville. Was this the same plant where you worked? Is so, when were you there?

I worked at Waterford 3 in Killona, LA from around 1977-1980, then at River Bend from around 1980-81 for Stone and Webster, then back to Waterford 3 for a couple of years, and then to Millstone in Groton, CT for about a year or so.

I was at River Bend early on, when it was still a hole in the ground. If you got there in the early 1990's it must have been nearing completion.

I had to look up "motor-generator" to learn why any sane person would employ perfectly good electricity to turn a motor shaft, just to use that rotation to turn a generator shaft, which produces...electricity. And now I have learned something.

If we are all being slightly pedantic why do we call them cars? A car is a shortened version of carriage. So should we all be saying that we all drive engine carriages?
Just a thought.

Interesting, I joined River Bend in 1991 when they were in their 3rd cycle of operation. I am a nuclear engineer with a specialization in BWR reactor engineering and have worked at a dozen BWRs. I have also written 2 books on BWR reactor engineering and am half way done on my 3rd book on this subject.

I submit that motor and engine are, in today's parlance, interchangeable. My evidence ...

M.I.T. says so, sort of. (See the definition of "engineer" near the bottom !!)

no....it mows the lawn. Can you imagine the racket an engine mower would make? Shaving down the height of an engine???

The MIT article was very interesting. Leave it to the eggheads at MIT to define what it is I have been doing for that last 32 years.

Depends whether he's named Jim. I used to know someone named Philip but everyone calls him Bill.

You make a valid point. My name is Francis, but everyone calls me Frank. (amoungst other things)

A lot of actors are in this situation too. His name was Marion Morrison but everyone called him John Wayne.
