possible transmisssion/abs problems?
Please let me know what you think, I have just purchased a 98 jag xk8 and have had a few problems that seem pretty serious. The car after driving it on the highway home had started making a short grinding noise when it gets above 30mph, the again at 50mph. It only lasts for a short time but is noticable when getting onto the highway. It does not do this during city driving. it did go in to Transmission limp mode a few times then after leaving it sit for a while it is no longer in that mode..very strange.. The sound that it has been making does not sound good, has anyone experienced this?
Also,
I have had the ABS light on with the signal Stability Control failure, this also does not go on until you actually press the gas. I'm don;t think the two problems are related... I do have an appointment with AAMCO transmission shop tommorow but just would like some info as to what i should expect.
On the highway and after the noises that sound like grinding, when over 5o I don;t seem to hear the sounds anymore and the car seems to work fine.
If anyone has had any experience with any of this, I would appreciate any input you could give me. thanks

RE: possible transmisssion/abs problems?
My wife's 98 XJ8L Vanden Plas jerked and went into limp home mode last Monday. Luckily she was less than a mile from home when this happened. She drove it (slowly) straight home and I had it picked up the next day and taken by flat bed truck to an AAMCO near where we live.
Tomorrow my wife is taking a cashier's check for $3968 to AAMCO for the tranny rebuild. If you drive a ZF transmission after it has gone into limp home mode you will probably damage the tranny pretty severely.

Just curious, I think I remember that AAMCO didn't rebuild ZF transmissions (that 'think I remember' is happening more and more). What kind of warranty do they offer with a rebuild? Did they actually rebuild it or only swap it out with one from a ZF repair facility?

AAMCO rebuilt the ZF tranny in my wife's XJ8. I don't have the cost breakdown of labor, but I can tell you thatthose trannys use a special fluid that is $80 a liter (yes, that is correct) and the tranny holds 11 liters of the stuff. Do the math...it was definitely more part than labor cost.
The ZF parts are expensive. Luckily we did not have any bad gears, and we did not damage the torque converter. The guy explained everything to me but that was a week ago.
You can get rebuilt ZF's for around $2495 on ebay. There is a place called Coventry West (near where I live) that sells used Jag parts. They have ZF trannys rebuilt by ZF for $3300, come with a 2 year warranty. But, after you pay for installation and fluid, that's quite a bit more. I don't know if the rebuilt trannys come with fluid in them?
After considering buying a rebuilt tranny, and the cost of installation, it was better to let AAMCO rebuild it. I complained about the high cost and got a 2 year warranty for the price of a 1 year. Doing it this way, if I am anywhere and the tranny acts up, I just have to find the nearest AAMCO.

14.20 per quart?? That's interesting. EVERYBODY I ahve talked to has said that the fluid is very expensive. My Jag tech who I know is truthful has told me the same thing.
I will let him know that you sell it for cheap. Ken - What is your source for the fluid? Not wanting a cheaper price just very curious who supplies it for such an inexpensive price...

RE: possible transmisssion/abs problems?
My father's 2000 XKR had similar problems when he first got it. Would make a scratching noise when driving on the freeway, would jerk and slide a little. Also it would affect the computer system and casue it to go into neutral some times. Took to 3 place, dealer didn't know what it was, saying they needed another computer to test it or could be trans problems. Took to another mechanic who claimed it was the trans and said to rebuilt it. Finally after that was not working, we got it to one last guy who works on jag's onlyand has the proper equipment and testing machines. It did not take him long to figure out that it was the bearings in the rear end. They were worn out or bad or something making the rear end act funny and caused the cars problems. After the bearings were replaced the car didn't have any of the problems. After several people saying they didn't know what the problems was or to rebuilt the trans, it was just rear end bearings. I personally think it still had some issues after it was fixed.

RE: possible transmisssion/abs problems?
I have since found out that I mis-quoted the fluid price. I thought I heard my Jag tech tell me it was $80 a liter - it is actually $50 a liter from Jag. I apologize for the mis-leading info. Also, when I picked my wife's car up at AAMCO he did tell me he found somebody that sold the fluid for around $35 a liter. So, I guess he made a little on the price of the fluid.
I talked to Pete at Coventry West and he says they get it straight from ZF for $26 a liter.
So what happened when you had the tranny examined at AAMCO?
