Power Steering Failure

Power Steering Failure
Hi all,
The various imps and gremlins that inhabit the oily interiors of my various Jags are fulminating against me with a vengeance at the moment.
It is now the turn of my relatively low mileage 1997 XK8 to conspire to confound me.
The XK8 has always been a problem child with a string of mainly electrical/ computer related problems.
It always seems to be on the verge of having it's faults ironed out and just when you think all is ok up pops another seemingly unrelated fault. To make matters worse the car taunts me by giving me glimpses of how brilliant it can be on the road but this condition lasts just long enough to lull me into a false sense of security before the next warning message is displayed or item breaks.
I have just returned from a 500 mike trip that started perfectly then on the return journey the same old chestnut appeared with the Low Brake Fluid Level red warning light. The fluid is fine and I'm convinced it has nothing to do with the float switch in the reservoir.
Next my wife announced ( she was at the helm) that the steering seemed very heavy. Indeed the car had lost it's power steering.
I checked the fluid level which was full and the serpentine belt appeared ok.
Before I launch into trying to track down the problem can anyone assist me with a plan of attack or sequence of actions to define the problem and correct it?
Any power steering problems I have encounted in the past has involved loss of fluid, belt failures or an obvious Problem.
Any advise or assistance greatly appreciated
regards
Al
