Default puff of smoke from cam cover

While messing about with the coolant leak from the filler tank, I noticed puffs of smoke coming from the cam cover. I had just given the car a hard 5 min drive to try to build up some good coolant pressure, left the engine running and popped the hood. It was then I noticed the smoke which continued for a couple of minutes then subsided.

The camera did not pick up the smoke puffs, but it was coming from this area, looks like there is a small oil leak above the exhaust manifold.

Will new cam cover gaskets fix this?

Yes, unless some one overtightened the cover and cracked it. Speaking of which, you might try backing off the cap screws and re- torquing. Not much to lose since it's already leaking.

Yes more than likely just the cam cover leaking. I noticed the same thing. First few minutes of driving it looked like puffs of smoke or steam coming from that area. Then it would subside until the next drive. The cam cover or gasket leaks over time. Usually in the lower back rear. The small leak drains onto the exhaust manifold and burns off as the engine heats up. Re-torque and then look at possible gasket replacement. I have heard that the cam covers themselves slightly warp over time. Due to age, heat and improper torque.

When you retorque, loosen all the bolts first.

Next tighten the two center bolts between the spark plugs.

Then tighten the perimeter bolts, working from the middle of the valve cover outwards, alternating top and bottom of the cover.

Easier to use a 1/4" flexible extension - takes up less room than a universal.
