Tonight when I got home I was greeted by our three dogs. Sammy proceeded to demonstrate the purpose of the otherwise useless rear seat: it's for dogs! Sammy claimed the rear seat and refused to get out until I took him for a drive.
Teddy took the front seat despite it being occupied by my backpack. Sammy grinning from the back seat. Teddy waiting to GO! Sammy likes the leather.
The true purpose of the rear seat (here in the US, anyway) is to barely qualify the vehicle as a four-seater and therefore help to reduce the owner insurance rates in most states....
My record is my friend Rachel when she was hammered but she's tiny even by asian standards lol. She may have been drunk but CLEARLY still irritated by the tiny seats.

I asked Sammy and he said (translated from Dog) that was just the excuse management used to build a doggy seat.
The reason I chose the Jaguar XK8 instead of a Porsche 911 or Mercedes SL was because the rear seats do serve the purpose of being capable of carrying 2 additional adult passengers when the occasion calls for it, albeit in the very short hops under local Hong Kong conditions...
Actually, I was driving a Corvette for 14 years without any rear seat and kind of enjoyed it. So when I started looking for a more "practical" replacement SWMBO insisted no more 2-seaters so I was looking at things like BMW 3-series and Infiniti G37. I always at least tried out the rear seats in those vehicles to see if they can really accommodate anyone in the rear.
So, of course, the first time I happened upon an XK8, I also tried out the rear seat. I don't know how I did it but I was somehow able to squeeze in. Definitely not comfortable but it can be done.
I'm 6' 2", I fit in the back seat, but the front seat has to be farther up than I'd fit in the front seat to do so.
I consider them useful easy to get storage, or emergency extra passengers. Extra passengers, are well, not always desired, so they *really* have to want to.
