Question on engine oil...overfill

On my 2000 XK8 with no oil cooler the top of the cross hatched section is seven quarts. The part number for the stick is XR83 6752 AC. The part number can be found just below the red handle. In the TSB as referenced earlier in this thread there is shown two other dip sticks that I assume represent different oil levels. I just measured the length of my dip stick and it is 21 inches from the very bottom of the red handle to the top of the cross hatched section. That is the seven quart level on my 2000 XK8. the top hole measures 20 5/8 inches from the bottom of the red handle. I would like for anyone that has either one of the other sticks mentioned in the TSB to make the same measurement and post it with this thread. I am especially interested in the stick P/N XR8 2806. That would be a good comparision.

Hi there, I don't know if anyone ever replied to you, but my 98 4.0 XJ8 has the NNE1723AA dipstick. It measures 581 mm from the flange at the handle to the top of the MIN hole, and 561 mm to the MAX hole. OR 22 1/8 and 22 7/8 inches. To be clear. this is from the flange on the handle that contacts the tube, NOT the very bottom of the red plastic.
21 3/8 and 22 1/8 is what I get from the plastic to the tops of the holes.

Thanks avt007. But would you check your measurements. I one sentence you quote 22 3/8 and the other 22 7/8. Even using the 22 7/8 as the correct number there is only 3/4 inches between holes. On mine, which is the other part number there is 1 1/8 distance between holes. I suppose that could be correct.
If you could please check your numbers. I agree that measuring from the bottom of the flange is better since that is the part that bottoms out on the dip stick tube.

My first 2006 XK8 oil & filter change will be due by late April / early May. I've been trying to discover the actual recommended oil fill amount since we purchased the car a little over two months ago. I've been told everything from 6.5 to 9 quarts depending on the source. Based mostly upon Brutal's input, I've decided to go with 8 quarts even....

I believe there was some confusion on the earlier models based on a previous post. I put in around 7.5 qts. ran the engine waited for an hour then pulled the dip stick to check and filled as needed until it was up to the hash mark. Have fun crawling underneath. I remember having to jack up the front end to pull the plug and then lowering it back down to pull all the oil out of the pan. Then rejacking to pull the filter and so on and so on. That's when I started looking at lifts on costco.com. Maybe one day.

My dipstick is this type -- no markings, only two small holes. The problem is not when I change oil, but in between changes when I read the stick to see if I need to add any. Being a '97, do I add to beyond the upper hole?

I've got the same stick...your lower hole is the minimum level, and the upper hole is the original recommended fill level. There is about a one quart difference between the upper and lower holes in the stick.
However, the capacity of the engine is such that you can easily add another quart above the upper hole. In fact, Jag recommended this for later cars, as you've read below. I regularly run 8 quarts, with no oil cooler, which puts me one quart over the upper hole in the stick.
The engine is designed with a windage tray that prevents the spinning crankshaft from contacting the oil in the sump and frothing it up.

I went and looked at the handbooks on Topix and the 2009 says 7.0Ltrs 7.4Qts and the 2005 says 7.8 Ltrs 8.2Qts
Is anybody confused yet?
Maybe they changed the sump design during the facelift?

I'd say that in general, no matter what the year of your XK8 or XKR, you don't want the level dropping below 6.0- 6.5 quarts.
But at the top end, there is more room for personal preference. Depending on whether your car has an oil cooler or not, 7 - 9 quarts would be fine with no frothing caused by the spinning crankshaft.
I'm at 8 quarts, with no oil cooler, and that's where I'm staying. I've got WhiteXKR's new oil pressure gauge upgrade...which shows ACTUAL oil pressure (imagine that), and at 8 quarts I'm good on the top and low ends of the pressure scale.

Excellent. So you can keep an eye/ear open for low oil pressure on a long run, that has been mentioned (for oil frothing)

Again, no frothing because there is a windage tray - a metal sheet - between the spinning crankshaft and the oil sump. Frothing is not an issue, which is one of the reasons the engine can accept higher amounts of oil.
