Question on Plastic Timing parts I just had replaced...
#21
Jimmy D's is in Eastham, MA, or was.
He turned it into a sports bar with live music at the weekends, after Jimmy took it over from his dad, saw some rockin' bands there.
I've heard it some people say it's gone a bit downhill, but I'd have to go back and see for myself really.
To your problem though, agree with RJ237 in having a word with SNG Barrett, mention you're a member on here for the discount. They'll put you right in the parts department.
Is it just the secondary tensioners that you plan to do for now or are you going to tackle the primary chains at the same time?

Depends on the water pump, whether it has the plastic fins or the metal ones, you need to fetch it off to have a look.
As for the timing chain procedure, download a copy of the JTIS manual found on here and you will have a step by step guide to do the job.
Check the secondary tensioners by removing the valve covers, if you have the red/brown coloured plastic ones, of which many many photos can be found in the forum, they are the 1st/2nd generation, you should have the new type metal bodied ones if they have been changed.
I'm presuming you have the V8 4.0L engine and not the 4.2.
Might be better to start a new thread of your own to get better help.

Just had my plastic timing parts replaced on my 1998 Jaguar Xk8...I bought the whole kit, in which, he charged me: $1,200 for this kit, which included the chains, primary tensioners, secondary tensioners and guides. Also, the Harmonic Balancer/Crankshaft Pulley was replaced with a used one for $400 and a new water pump ($200). He took pictures of the what he replaced and gave me the old parts. I thought he was going to replace the whole timing kit that I bought, but when I got there, he said the timing chains where in mint shape, so he didn't replace them. The total for the whole job was: $2,840 and the car rides good!
As shown below, are pictures of the engine shown what was replaced; and the old plastic parts that he replaced... My question is: From the pictures below, it looks like I have to tensioners that where not replaced -Is this a big deal???
Thanks, Art

Some kits will come with the shorter bolts. If not, the Ford part number is W500301S300 which any Ford dealer should be able to source for you.
They're about 1/4" shorter than the ones you'll take out.
Were they not included in the original kit you paid for?

michaelh, The Mechenic/Owner never gave me secondary tensioners from the kit - he did give me the timing chains (4) that where in the kit, but not the secondary tensioners. I did try to contact him, but he never gets back to me. I went there once and he wasn't there <grin>

This might help. Below is the thread I published sometime back with pictures when I did my secondary tensioners. Stay away from that mechanic.

Aleather - Give us a call, we keep the OEM and aftermarket pieces on the shelf at a fraction of the prices above.
We can also recommend a few shops in your area that have done this job many times and know the cars very well.
Kind Regards,

And that just goes to show how **** poor that mechanic was.
Is it the picture, or are one of those tensioners a bit sqiew-iff?
Jaguar added a spring in the tensioner to "upgrade" it, basically it was supposed to get rid of the death rattle, in the second gen tensioners.
If you have no spring then quite possibly you had the 1st gen lot.
Now you've tackled that job, wasn't so hard now was it.................
Good work, well done.

Now 'Resticted Proformance' light comes on???
I finished the tensioner job today and started the car and it run good for about 5 minutes and started to stall out. I looked at the dash and when it starts to stall it says, 'Restricted Proformance'. What could be wrong? Did one of the valve covers gasket not go on right???
