Questions about XK8, Xtype member may be jumping forums
Hi Guys, I'm kinda new over on the X type forum and I posted a question over there today and ChrisX suggested I post part of it here. I'm just looking for some input on the XK8 and what should I look out for? BRUTAL has already offered help and he's local so that make me feel much better but anything you guys can offer will just make me that much more prepaired. Thanks
Here is part of that post.
I’ve had my ’04 X Type Sport for a little over 2 years now and I don’t know if I should keep going with it or move on. I really do like a lot of things about the X but the one thing I would like more of (power) cant really be added without blowing the T/C. I am just looking for a little input form some of the Techs or other members who have owned a XK8. I am going to look at an ’04 convertible with 40,000 on it tomorrow and I was just wondering if they are any better or worse as far as maintenance and reliability go. I assume labor cost would be the same and parts would be a little more but would it be in the shop more often?

With an 04 XK8 you could get a car with Select Edition Warrranty. This would mean your repair costs would be zero for the next 2 years.
The most important question you need to ask yourself, is how badly do you want to to own a 2 seater. Cause short of drunk girls coming out of a bar, I haven't found anyone else that can fit in the back seat of an XK8.

From what I have read around here, the x-type, s-type, xj, then the XKs (in that order) has required the most service. XKs are price, use quality parts, seems put together a bit better than the x's and s's, and just don't have much problems. There are the biggies that always (or will at once in it's life) crop up, and include
- various suspension issues (bushings, mounts, etc)
- reach/tilt steering wheel motor
- convertible top hydraulic lines
- headrest cable disengagement
- CCV vent tube corrosion
- expansion tank and/or thermostat housing leak
I can't remember anything else, but these are the most common that I have seen. You'll pay more, but the xk is a good value.
