Question Rear right quarter window: attempting regulator repair, need HELP! XK8 Convertible

Where the regulator used to be - there's also another white pulley further up (obviously):

Didn't look too happy

This looks non-trivial to fix..

Questions

1. Can I fix this without removing the whole assembly inc. the rear quarter window?

2. Forget 1.. How do I fix this (and how do I reinforce the regulator to ensure this doesn't happen again?)

3. Will I get in trouble if not reinstalling the PVC I ripped to shreds? And if, where can I get it?

4. Where near San Francisco can I get this fixed? I've already done some work myself, but for the whole job I got a quote for $1000 :S

Have you looked into the TSB 501-49 that covers 1999 – 2000 xk8 rear quarter window regulator failure?

I've seen this photo, which hints to how to thread the thing, not sure where it needs reinforcing though.

I have not had reason to look into it but with the TSB I would see what Jaguar was going to do with it first.

Call or go by Jaguar and ask them what this TSB covers and what they will do about your window? When you find out let us know.

501-49
DATE
11/01 XK
MODEL
1999-2000
MY XK Conv. VIN
041998-A07948 Rear Quarter Window Regulator Failure - Excessive Bracket Flex - Repair Procedure
Issue:
Some 1999-2000 MY XK convertibles, within the above VIN ranges, may experience customer complaints of failure of the regulator for the rear quarter window. It has been identified that the rear quarter window regulator assembly base plate may be made from a softer than normal metal. Although this material is within specification, it can lead to excessive flexing of the base plate, subsequently leading to the drive cable becoming detached. To eliminate this concern, a reinforcing bracket has been added to the bottom of the assembly to improve stability.
If a regulator fails, replace the assembly with the latest level regulator. The opposite side must also be checked for the latest level component and replaced if necessary.
Action:
In case of a customer complaint of regulator failure on a 1999-2000 MY XK convertable, within the above VIN range, follow the workshop procedure outlined below:
WORKSHOP PROCEDURE
1. Place suitable covers over the floor and seats. 2. Remove the failed rear quarter window regulator assembly (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section 501-11, SRO 86.25.11).

This is from another thread, but I think I can see how to thread the wire, am a bit concerned that it's too "dented" though.

Also, is the supporting brace or whatever connected between the regulator motor and the regulator plate, or between the regulator plate and the chassis?

Yeah, that reinforcing bracket fails as well; both mine did. 'IF' the TSB will fix, then obviously have the dealer fix it. My 04 had no such luck. I fixed mine by removing the entire assembly and re-string it. Its not as easy as you think as its a push-me/pull-you deal. Takes some thinking to ensure each pulley is wrapped correctly. Then I drilled a hole in that 'tail' (left of the white, bottom pulley so its behind the car body. Then inserted a bolt into that tail assembly with a nut front & back so it looks like a stud sticking out. The 'head' of that bolt rests on the car body... keeping it from flexing forward.

When the 'tail' flexs towards you, it pulls off that bottom pulley.

Now, the bad news... With that cable so kinked up, it probably won't work as it'll hop off the pulley when the kink rounds the pulley. You can't straighten as they're bound wire.

I've found the regulator and motor only assembly for 335 bucks new, I guess I need to ensure it's the new type, but seems like a decent deal? Or what if I could just get a new wire?

What do you mean, IF the TSB will fix it then have the dealer fix it? Would that be cheaper somehow?

New for $335 ? Yeah, I doubt that as these are like $800 someplace on-line. The dealer is even worse. Just ensure its what you're expecting.
Oh, you find just the wire either...

If the dealer fixes via the TSB, it'd be F-R-E-E. These are like mini recalls without the Fed's involvement.

FREE, OMG. Well, so I bought this used, and it was originally bought from british motor cars.

Can I still get them to fix it?

"IF" its covered under the TSB; of course. Just as a warranty or actual recall is covered, dealerships don't care who bought it new, just who owns it now.

Talk to your local dealer and ask about the specific TSB. If you don't like what they say, find the TSB contents somewhere and read for yourself. You won't know if the TSB will help until you research it a little...
If so, put it back the way you found it - .

So are TSBs covered for the full life of a car?

TSB stands for Technical Service Bulletin and does not mean that it will do a full replacement at no cost to you. That is why I suggested that you call and talk to Jaguar at your local dealership and see what they are offering. It may or may not be to your advantage.

Under normal conditions I do not copy from AllData!

Thanks, but basically all the new info was a drawing of the reinforcing bracket. (Consider in a teaser for alldata

I'll get in touch with the dealer and hear what they have to say.

TSB won't cover it :| The best repair quote I've found is $800, 4 hours of labor and a new regulator assembly (but probably not the new reinforced one???).

So this is the reinforcement you did?

I guess I could try to restring the cable (even though it's seriously kinked..) and do the reinforcement. If that doesn't work, get a new assembly with cable for $335 and try to restring it again without removing the assembly.

If you elect to replace the entire regulator I would like to know the process of doing it. Others have attempt but never reported back on how it was done. Sorry it did not work out in your favor.

JITS covers the process OK, but I really don't want to remove the whole thing as it's a lot of work and the window will need readjustment.
