Some of the various trunk mounted luggage racks I've seen are composed of chromed strips with an inlaid rubber strip that mount directly to the trunk lid with drilled fasteners. Would several of those not do a good job of accomplishing what you're after without requiring custom fabrication.
I also recall back in my auto dealer days having after market bodyside moldings installed that were an aluminum strip with a rubber insert that were affixed to the side of vulnerable car doors. Not the door edges, the door side. They were cut to length and then had a pointed end slide into each end to make them have a finished look. They were generally pop riveted on.
