Default Rear speaker goes almost silent

In the 2001 XK8 I figured how to find the fade, bass treble etc without the handbook. I turned the radio fader to a high number and I heard basically nothing. I've heard they are sub woofers only. Is that accurate? I dont hear any bass subwoofer sounds just scratchy junk. Can anyone tell me how to access those speakers? Any further thoughts, replacements?

Thank you,
Mark

You've got a woofer and a tweeter in the convertible rear.

I had hoped to read 1 channel was dead back there, the speaker wires run underneath the s
Rear seat bottom, which has a metal bracket that can press on it causing an open.

I've had debris (leafs) work its way between the cone wind the cover. Causes distortion but not to the extent you described.

I don't recall the step by step to remove them sorry.

I have a 2003 and the bass control only affects the rear sub woofers, turn the bass to zero and nothing comes out of the rear speakers, when I first bought the car I thought the rears were done but I found the bass level was turned to zero, the speakers came to life when I turned the bass up.

After all the help from many, it was definitely the Amplifier that had gone bad in the back. Now I have to decide if I want to upgrade the speakers. Thank everyone who helped along the way.

still not sure why I dont have tweeters in the back on the sides, with premium, but all good.

The two speakers (mid & bass) in each rear pod were only present in the early HK premium system. The Alpine (2000 on) has only the bass driver.

Mark,
how did you determine it was the amp? Is there a way to test that?

I have a 2005 with Alpine premium, and the rears put out a very little sound even when cranked to high volume. They are 2x2 ohm dual voice coil, as other have. I replaced one with another 2x2 but problem persists (the good replacement was even quieter than the stock). So I think it might be the amp. But the fronts all work great...

I found a used Amp very reasonable. I installed it and FM, LOL tge rears sounded much better. I did order new speakers supposed to fit. They didn't and through a lot of conversations with the speaker company, the original amp is too weak for newer better speakers and would require an upgraded Amp to power them properly. By this point I said, it's much better with replacement Amp, I'll go with that.

Thanks for that. Been chasing this gremlin a lot already. My sound back there is not distorted (though it favors the low end like a sub should), but it is just attenuated by about 10x. You can't hear it at all under normal conditions, the fronts are much louder, even if you put your ear up to the rear speaker.

I will futz with the connections, and failing some FM of my own, will go get a used amp. Easy enough to try!

In convertible the rears only get sub frequency but they are not real sub woofers, they play the spectrum. It's not a good set up.
